Update (3:30 PM) - The HTML metadata on the European Nintendo Direct website is using "3DS" as one of the page's keywords (in case it wasn't painfully obvious to everyone that Pokemon is in fact announcing a 3DS game tomorrow).

The January 8th announcement page on the official Japanese website just updated, stating that tomorrow, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata will hold a 10-minute "Pokemon Direct" video conference to announce the big Pokemon news. According to Nintendo, this will take place at 8:00 PM Japan time, or 11:00 AM GMT / 6:00 AM EST / 3:00 AM PDT. We will of course update you as the news is rolling out, so be sure to check back!

As of this news story's initial posting, the countdown timer on the Japanese Pokemon website is programmed incorrectly and only shows an accurate countdown time for fans in Japan (I had to delay posting this story because their timer was conflicting with the conference time and I couldn't figure out what was going on). So instead, you can view what time the video will air in your region by clicking here.

So a big Pokemon announcement coming through Nintendo Direct a.k.a. "Pokemon Direct?" I doubt this is anything other than a new generation announcement. Gamefreak has had the 3DS development kit since long before Black and White's release and would likely have figured out how to use the 3D to Pokemon's full benefit now. It was obviously too late for them to implement the 3D in B/W since they would not have been able to think it out fully, and any sequel or remake wouldn't rob a future generation of such a groundbreaking feature by debuting in 3D (as we saw with BW2). So now it seems natural to introduce the next generation of Pokemon on the 3DS. I imagine that because of the 3D, Gamefreak probably had to re-imagine how to present the Pokemon world on the available hardware, and of course because it's Gamefreak, they probably did a spectacular job. Nintendo itself doesn't usually get involved in Pokemon announcements, so the fact they are this time seems to indicate that they probably want to show off a groundbreaking Pokemon game. I wonder just how much the 3D will change the way the Pokemon world is presented (assuming all of this predicting is correct).

For those of you who did not see my editorial in November, I predicted we would get Generation VI hints in December because of how the Genesect movie would be advertised. Assuming that we are in fact learning about Generation VI tomorrow, it turns out I was off by a few weeks for when Pokemon would actually start hinting about the next generation because of the unexpected shiny Genesect news they used for the movie's December advertising. Anyway, my editorial went into why we would probably see a Generation VI soon, why the next Pokemon games would not be Ruby and Sapphire remakes, and several other interesting predictions based on past Pokemon trends. You should read it if you didn't back in November!

As usual, you can discuss this news story and all of our other news stories on our forums.

Update (8:30 AM) - I just noticed that if this were a new Eeveelution, it would be the eighth one... and the announcement is being made on the 8th! It's a Tuesday too, which is an odd day of the week to make a Pokemon announcement. Not sure if I'm looking too much into things at this point though...

Pokemon's Twitter account posted this literally a minute ago. I totally said this on our Facebook page yesterday afternoon (:D), though it's possible Pokemon is very much aware of the fact that fans are speculating about a new Eeveelution and purposefully playing to this to trick us.

Trivia time! How many possible evolutions of Eevee are there?

Could they be hinting at a new Eeveelution in light of the announcement coming Tuesday? Ash is currently battling in the Unova League (in Japan) and one of the contenders, Virgil, owns an Eevee and all of its evolutions. Could we see his Eevee evolve into a new Eeveelution during the League? Blaziken was first introduced in the Johto League, after all. There have been many Eeveelution promotions these past few months, and the Genesect movie is also going to feature an Eevee mini-movie, so could this all be leading to a new Eeveelution or is this all just a happy coincidence? I don't know for sure, but it's all just a tad too convenient to not be leading up to something in my opinion...

Update (10:30 AM) - The official English Pokemon Twitter account has also just made the January 8th announcement, telling fans to check Pokemon.com on January 8th for "major" news. The only time both the English site and Japanese site have announced anything simultaneously is when they have unveiled a future Pokemon game (along with its two version mascots).

The official Japanese Pokemon website has posted that they will make an "important" announcement on January 8th, the same date the BW2 commercial promised on Japanese TV. The announcement's page recommends users to bookmark it and check it again on that date. What's gonna happennnnn?

Junichi Masuda has stated on his Twitter account that Shigeki Morimoto will appear on January 6th's episode of Pokemon Smash. This is two days before Gamefreak is set to make some sort of big announcement.

Morimoto has been involved in every main series Pokemon game, creating and programming the Pokemon battle systems along with the Pokemon Mew, and he was the director of HeartGold and SoulSilver (oh lawdy I know what everyone is going to say the second I typed the end of that sentence). However, in his two appearances on Pokemon Smash in the past, he has only helped out contestants with Pokemon battles rather than actually announcing anything. So we'll see what happens, if anything.

Junichi Masuda announced on his Twitter earlier this month that he had just taped an episode of Pokemon Smash. The episodes usually air around a month after they're taped, so it will probably air sometime in January. Mr. Masuda has often announced big Pokemon news when appearing on Pokemon Smash, so that taping may perhaps be the one we're really expecting.

Pokemon Announcement on January 8th

A new BW2 commercial has appeared on Japanese television today (yes, they're still advertising the games), and at the end of it, there is a title card announcement which states "We at Pokemon want to share the latest news with you. Scheduled announcement: January 8th." Obviously Pokemon plans to make a big announcement.

Gamefreak director Junichi Masuda revealed on his Twitter in December that he had just filmed an episode of Pokemon Smash, and since the episodes are recorded a month or so in advance, it's likely the episode he taped will air in January. Masuda usually appears on Pokemon Smash to make game announcements.

While I originally predicted we would get a 6th generation announcement this month, Pokemon pulled a fast one and revealed shiny Genesect - their movie "wow factor" for December. However, as I stated in my post (and even with the shiny Genesect revelation), there are still 7 months until the movie premieres and nothing else for Pokemon to advertise since there are no new Pokemon left to be revealed. They may delay a 6th generation announcement again, but it's inevitable that there is going to be one soon. We'll see on January 8th!

Wednesday, December 12th, 2012 @ 2 PM PST -  By: Water Pokémon Master

Oha Suta just finished airing a teaser trailer for Extremespeed Genesect which shows two Genesect! One Genesect is the normal purple color while the other is red. In the trailer, both are seen flying through the air and the red one overtakes the purple one. At the end of the trailer, the red one also turns purple. The narrator simply states: "A 3 million old mystery, wrapped in a red veil!" (Thanks goes to Gin for the translation.) What could this mean for the film? Are there actually going to be two Genesect?

Update (3:00 PM) - The official Pokemon movie site has posted a small premise for the film as well as its mini-movie, "Pikachu and Eevee Friends," which Gin has translated as follows:

"Genesect," a Pokemon from 300 million years ago. The mysterious "Red Genesect," different from regular Genesect, appears. Posing super speed and boasting other strengths, it is a Mythical Pokemon, but what sort of activity will it do in a big city, the symbol of modern civilization? | Pikachu goes to play for the first time with many other cute Pokemon at Eevee's home, "Eevee House!" Due to Meowth's mischief, however, there's an uproar?!
