Japan’s September Set to Contain Reprints from ‘Base Set!’
As I posted a few months ago, a new set named “20th Anniversary Concept Pack” will be released in Japan on September 16th. It will likely become our November set before the first Sun and Moon set is released in February.
We’ve now learned the set will contain some reprinted cards from Base Set featuring their original artwork. We’ve also learned the set will feature new Pokemon-EX, Mega Evolutions, BREAK Pokemon, and Trainers (as is typical).
Because new cards are confirmed, this set might be like Generations where only a few cards are classic reprints (in the case of Generations, it was only Slowpoke, Tauros, and Imakuni?). However, the set’s advertising heavily emphasizes the reprints and how they’ll attract older fans, so it’ll probably be a greater proportion than Generations.
Note that Tauros in Generations featured reprinted artwork, but did not have its original attacks from Base Set. Tauros was the first reprint to ever have its attacks changed, so the same might be the case for some of the reprinted Pokemon in this set. Note also that any reprints will have modern XY card templates, not the original ones.
As a reminder of what we posted before, the set will have at least 87 cards (excluding secret rares). Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, Dragonite, Machamp, Starmie, and Ninetales will be some of the Generation I Pokemon featured. Each booster box will contain 15 booster packs, and each pack will have 10 cards, including a guaranteed holo card.
So far, the only Generation I Pokemon to not have a Mega Evolution card are Mega Pidgeot and Mega Pinsir. Will we see them in this set?
A blister pack containing Surfing Pikachu, Slowbro-EX, M Slowbro-EX, and Slowbro Spirit Link will also be released on September 16th.
