Japan’s First Gen 8 Sets: ‘Starter Set V Decks,’ ‘Sword & Shield,’ ‘V Uprising!’

We now have the first Gen 8 TCG news!

On November 29th, Japan will get several TCG products to promote Sword and Shield:

  • A pack of card sleeves featuring Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble (720 yen)
  • A deck box featuring Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble (362 yen)
  • A damage counter case featuring Zacian and Zamazenta (300 yen)
  • A set of “coin dice” featuring Pikachu (450 yen)
  • A set of Sword & Shield acrylic damage counters (550 yen)

On the same day, Japan will get five “Starter Set V” decks for 1,556 yen each. Each 60-card deck will focus on either Grass, Fire, Water, Lightning, or Fighting-type Pokemon.

We do not know who the decks will feature. But judging by the accessories that are releasing the same day, the first three will obviously focus on the Starter Pokemon, the Lightning one may focus on Pikachu, and perhaps the Fighting one will focus on Zacian and Zamazenta. This could be our first hint that the two are part Fighting-type.

A “Starter Set V5: Complete Battle Set” will also release on November 29th for 7,780 yen. It will contain all five decks and a card holder that lets you splay out the decks for selection.

On December 8th, Japan will get its first Sword and Shield sets: SW1W Sword and SW1H Shield. Like most new set blocks, the set is split in two. Each set will feature 60 cards each before secret rares.

Alongside the release of the set, Japan will also get…

  • A card storage box featuring Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble (1,550 yen)
  • A carrying case featuring Zacian and Zamazenta (1,315 yen)
  • A binder featuring Zacian and Zamazenta (1,550 yen) (and also extra card pages)
  • A deck box featuring Zacian and Zamazenta (362 yen)
  • A pack of card sleeves featuring Zacian and Zamazenta (720 yen)
  • A “Premium Trainer Box” (pictured right) two days before the set releases, with 10 Sword packs, 10 Shield packs, a bunch of Trainers and Energy, and all the usual items like damage counters.

Following the release of the Sword and Shield set, a “Zacian and Zamazenta Box” will release on December 27th for 1,500 yen. The box will help support decks using Zacian V and Zamazenta V from Sword and Shield. It will come with four new promo cards, including ones featuring Zacian and Zamazenta.

And last for today — the first Sword & Shield subset will be named S1a V Rising and will release on February 7th, 2020. The set will contain 70 cards, excluding secret rares. Nothing else is known about the set at this time.
