TPCI Announces 2022 Championship Series
In a post on Pokemon.com, TPCI has officially announced the 2022 Championship series.
Highlights of the post include:
- Players aging up in age divisions (moving on from being a Senior to a Master, for example). Last year, players that would have moved from one age division to another were left in their 2020 age division.
- A split requirement for championship points for players that qualified for the World Championships in 2020 versus those who had not. Players who met the requirements to compete in the 2020 World Championships automatically meet the CP threshold to qualify for Thursday. Players who meet the new threshold will qualify for Friday instead. The specific CP requirements have yet to be announced.
- The World Championships are once again expected to take place in London this year, though only Australia and New Zealand have resumed sanctioned play.
The text of TPCI’s post follows below.
Planning is underway for the 2022 Championship Series season. Pokémon Organized Play joins players in looking forward to the resumption of exciting competitions around the world. The health and safety of our communities continue to be the most important aspect of resuming live events, and the situation is being continually monitored. The timing for the next live Play! Pokémon events will be determined by the health mandates, guidelines, and recommendations provided by appropriate government agencies.
This update provides information about the 2022 Championship Series season under the assumption that most play will be able to resume in some form over the next 12 months. Play! Pokémon events remain suspended except in Australia and New Zealand, but the plans for the next season anticipate that the Pokémon World Championships will take place in London in August 2022.
Accordingly, the following changes are being made:
The age division for players in the 2022 season will increase by one year from the 2020 season:
- Junior Division: Born in 2010 or later
- Senior Division: Born in 2006, 2007, 2008, or 2009
- Masters Division: Born in 2005 or earlier
The 2022 World Championships will take place over four days, beginning on a Thursday.
Some players will age up to a new division as a result of this update. If a player qualified for Worlds as a Junior and is now a Senior, or was a Senior and is now a Masters player, their qualification for Worlds Day 1 will be maintained regardless of whether they meet the point threshold of their new age division.
The Championship Points (CP) that eligible players earned in 2020 will transfer in whole to the 2022 season. Players will continue to add to this total with any CP earned in the 2022 season.
There will be two CP qualification thresholds:
- Thursday players: players who reach the qualification bar that is the same as the 2020 bar. Therefore, players who previously qualified for Worlds are still qualified for 2022.
- Friday players: players who reach a new CP qualification threshold set in 2021 or 2022 when more information is available about qualifying events. Players who hit the Friday CP threshold will skip play on Thursday.
The number of CP required for qualification will be announced at a later date.
Information on Best Finish Limits will be available at a later time.
This is only the first update regarding the 2022 Championship Series season. Further updates will be provided as more information is confirmed. Please keep checking Pokemon.com/PlayPokemon for the latest information on Play! Pokémon events.
