Paradox Pokemon Cards and Return of ACE SPEC Mechanic Revealed at Worlds!
As expected, the first Paradox Pokemon cards were just revealed during the closing ceremony at Worlds! They will feature “Ancient” and “Future” mechanic labels. This means there will be certain Abilities, Trainers, and attacks that enhance them.
The “Ancient” cards feature a swoosh in the template background that resembles layers of earth while the “Future” cards feature a digitized background.
These Paradox Pokemon cards will release in Japan’s SV4 Ancient Roar & Future Flash set, which releases on October 27th, and our SV4 Paradox Rift set, which releases on November 3rd.
We expected Paradox Pokemon to be revealed at Worlds this year because trademark listings implied the next few Japanese sets will feature them. Furthermore, the only Paradox Pokemon that have debuted in the TCG so far are Great Tusk ex and Iron Treads ex — a suspicious lack of representation. New Paradox Pokemon would also mirror the introduction of Ultra Beast-GX to the Sun & Moon era’s fourth set, which was announced at Worlds 2017.
It was also revealed the ACE SPEC mechanic will be returning to the TCG next year! The mechanic was first introduced in the Boundaries Crossed set in 2012. ACE SPEC cards were powerful Item cards that were limited to one per deck. They will probably work in a similar way.
Since 2016, there has been a new TCG mechanic revealed at each Worlds:
- 2016: Pokemon-GX
- 2017: Ultra Beast-GX
- 2018: TAG TEAM cards
- 2019: Pokemon V
- 2020: —
- 2021: —
- 2022: Return of Pokemon ex
