Nintendo to Announce Switch Successor “Within This Fiscal Year”

Nintendo has revealed on Twitter that it will make an announcement about the successor to the Switch “within this fiscal year,” meaning sometime before March 2025. This is the first time Nintendo has publicly acknowledged its next console.

Nintendo also announced a Nintendo Direct for June, but stated there will be no mention of the Switch successor in that presentation. Rather, it will focus on Switch games for the latter half of 2024.

In February, insider sources told publications like Bloomberg that the Switch successor was originally planned to release at the end of 2024 but was delayed until March 2025 to ensure there would be enough supply to meet demand.

According to leaks, the successor is expected to be backwards compatible with Switch 1 game cartridges and current Joy-Con and Pro controllers. The leaks also claim it will feature a larger 8-inch screen with 1080p resolution.

As of March, the Switch has sold more than 141 million units since its release in 2017. The existence of the Switch was first announced by Nintendo in March 2015 — over nine years ago.

Pokemon LEGENDS: Z-A will release in 2025 for the Switch. Presumably Pokemon will release its first Generation X game on the Switch successor later on, once enough people own it.
