“Pokemon TCG Pocket” Receives 10 Million Downloads and Special Meowth Event, Adds Monthly Hourglasses

According to its official Twitter account, Pokemon TCG Pocket has received over 10 million downloads in its first day. The app received six million pre-registrations leading up to its October 30th launch date.

The app also launched monthly hourglasses in their in-game shop today. A pack of 6x Pack Hourglasses and 6x Wonder Hourglasses will cost 18x Shop Tickets. Once you use 10 of them, you’ll have to wait until the following month to buy them again. (Check out our Pocket guide for more info on the game.)

The first in-game event also started today. Until November 14th, players can complete seven new Event missions:

  • Collect 1 Chansey (promo) card. Reward: 1x Event Shop Ticket (Meowth).
  • Collect 2 Chansey (promo) cards. Reward: 1x Event Shop Ticket (Meowth).
  • Collect 1 Meowth (promo) card. Reward: 1x Event Shop Ticket (Meowth).
  • Collect 2 Meowth (promo) cards. Reward: 1x Event Shop Ticket (Meowth).
  • Wonder pick 3 times. Reward: 1x Event Shop Ticket (Meowth).
  • Wonder pick 5 times. Reward: 1x Event Shop Ticket (Meowth).
  • Wonder pick 7 times. Reward: 3x Event Shop Ticket (Meowth).

Players will have a chance to encounter a Chansey and Meowth promo in new, special sections of Wonder Pick. Collecting the promos will complete the above missions.

During an event period like this one, there will be two new sections that may show up in your Wonder Pick menu when it refreshes every hour or so. They are called “Bonus Pick” and “Chansey Pick.” The promo cards may appear in these sections along with other items. The “Bonus Pick,” as the name implies, is free to use and doesn’t require any stamina. The “Chansey Pick” is much rarer, but the home menu of the app will alert you if there is one waiting for you.

Once you’ve earned the special Event Shop Tickets for this event, you’ll be able to purchase the following Meowth accessories from the Events section of the Shop. Each costs 3x tickets:

There seems to be a curse - perhaps perpetuated by design - that mobile Pokemon games open to immense interest from fans, thanks to the incredible brand pull, yet end up not able to sustain their massive playerbases due to shallow gameplay and lack of features.
TCG Pocket is like a step in a great direction, but taken by the smallest, littlest Joltik.

It's a slog by day two because there's no content to the game beyond a few AI decks. Waiting 12 hours to open a pack of 5 cards that will be mostly/all duplicates? Ehh...

I also imagine there will be massive restrictions whenever they add the trading capability because collecting all the cards is one of the few goals you can set right now.

It's still a slog after your first 2 weeks of playing, they need to change how Wonderpick works and increase rate of hourglasses.
The game needs that damn ladder that Online had. So does Live, although it needs it 60% less than Pocket because at least Live has a fantastic battlepass. Genuinely, what is there to work towards and do in pocket? I've had it since the 29th and I'm already bored. I already play it way less than I did on my first day. There's no goal besides some cards you want, and even then that's annoying because instead of just replicating Live's quite good Credits, they went with the awful system that is pack points. Sorry if it seems like I'm complaining, we just need to voice our problems with new games otherwise they'll turn out like go and improve worse than a snail's pace 😭

I'm glad the price increase was a mistake, I was pretty worried lol. The Meowth and Chansey event promo cards are pretty easy to get to be fair. They give you a few free chances to get them. I've ended up with 3 Meowths and 2 Chanseys.

I tried out this app about a month ago, I’m not really a huge fan. It’s like ok, but doesn’t even come close to the full-on TCG

One good thing I can say about Pocket, is that it genuinely, though slowly, let's you collect cards at an appropriate pace. Think of it as collecting a modern set that has over 100 cards in the main set and over 100+ secret rares. Not many people have finished collecting the master set for 151, paldean fates, hidden fates, etc, because of the sheer number of cards in the set. So, opening 1 pack every 12 hours seems about right for the pacing. It also makes me feel like collecting a PSA 10 Master Set of English 151 reverse foil rarity and higher for now. That Voltorb will be the asterisk to my collection though

This depends how long they keep a set in circulation. Will they phase out the current one for another or keep it and the items associated to it forever in the app? If it is seasonal, then the current rate is horrible due to the RNG of the packs. Can't even turn in duplicates for the currency used to buy a specific copy of a card which would be a big change in the right direction.

Ah, I see what you mean. Youre correct about that. And also if they introduce a new set while keeping the previous one, then basically its collect the new set and play catch up with the previous one. Reminds me of duel links all over again if that happens

I assume once trading is activated people will still be able to trade towards their missing cards.

Already in a mindset not to buy anything with real money...unless the game feels fun and calls me back frequently throughout the day because it's fun. In that case, I'd love to spend real money.

But no, it's such a grind that I'm already forgetting about checking to see if I can open a pack. Reminds me of how stupid Peridot was in making sure you hated playing it. 12 hours to open a pack? Lol, good luck holding my attention.
