Rotom from “Heat Wave Arena” Revealed!

A new Rotom (and its Illustration Rare version) will appear in Heat Wave Arena, which releases on March 14th in Japan. The cards from the set will become part of our Destined Rivals set in May.

Rotom – Lightning – HP60
Basic Pokemon

[L] Astonish: 20 damage. Choose a random card from your opponent’s hand. Your opponent reveals that card and shuffles it into their deck.

[C][C] Gadget Show: 30x damage. This attack does 30 damage for each Pokémon Tool attached to all of your Pokémon.

Weakness: Fighting (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

omg 😭 i have a binder page that has the castform trainer gallery and IR plus the rotom V alt art, with the last space left saved specifically for the hopes of getting EXACTLY this card!!! im so happy 😍😍

It’s too bad DTE and Honchkrow V are rotating. Wait, is Honchkrow even still legal? Either way. This would be a fun rogue deck, but we would really need to have an actually good consistency tool which does something when you attach it for the deck to work. Something like searching your deck for an energy and putting it into your hand when you attach it, or searching your deck for a basic Pokemon when you attach it. Otherwise the deck won’t work. Especially without a DCE clone in format. Pokemon keeps printing these tool-related synergies and it consistently makes me sad that they never go all the way with it, this sort of deck has never existed in the competitive landscape before

We had one, it just rotated. Actually, we still have a good one in standard, the Fan Call one that can find you your Noctowl line (Or your 151 Ditto, which you can promote to the active with Latias ex's help to basically let you grab any basic you want with Rotom). The two other best Rotom in the game's history are the one from Majestic Dawn (Great energy acceleration in the 2008 Worlds format) and the one from Undaunted (Useful in Durant Mill for fishing Durant out of your prizes).

If you're wondering when we'll ever get a deck featuring Rotom as the main Pokémon, however, so far we've had a few meme decks and nothing more. There's the Roto Motor box archetype from the Sun and Moon era (Which puts tools in the discard pile to let each Rotom attack for free), and there was the deck that used Rotom V's Scrap Short attack to put discarded tools in the lost zone to do more damage (Which ironically seems to have run just Rotom V and not the VSTAR or Porygon2 also designed for the deck).

I'm not sure what the former deck's win rate was like, but the latter seemed to have a 35.06% online win rate in the Lost Origins format and had a particularly abysmal matchup against Mew VMAX (6.67%).

To be fair, Powerglass was printed while Pachirisu/Honchkrow V was still in format. Although I'm sure Pachirisu/Honchkrow V became much worse than it already was when Flaaffy rotated.
 
This card is super cute, always happy to have another Taiga Kayama illustration but I wish it was a different Pokémon, we just got a rotom that looks similar in Lost Origin :,)
 
I don't really mind getting another Rotom since I like it, but it's true there are other Pokemon who could use more attention. Also, we could really use another Wash or Frost Rotom...haven't had one of those since SuMo!
