Japan’s First 2019 Sets: ‘Night Unison,’ ‘Full Metal Wall’
Japan’s January set will be named Night Unison. It will release on January 11th and feature 55 cards. Presumably this will be Japan’s SM9a set, following the release of December’s SM9 Tag Bolt.
October’s Dark Order will already feature Dark-type Pokemon, so perhaps “Night” is referring to Psychic-types? Or maybe it’s not a type-themed set and the name is referring to something else? Or Creatures is just making another Dark-type set for the heck of it?
But that’s not all! Japan’s February set will be named Full Metal Wall. It will feature 54 cards and release on February 1st, presumably as Japan’s SM9b set. The set could obviously be a Metal-type set, though we’re also getting Metal-types in Dark Order.
Japan’s Sun & Moon mini-sets always feature certain types, so there’s no reason to think Pokemon isn’t continuing this, especially when both set names refer to types. Why Creatures is repeating types is unknown, especially when Dark Order already covers Darkness and Metal Pokemon.
The “Full Metal Wall” name matches trademarks that were recently filed by Pokemon. A “Double Blaze” name was also trademarked, so it could also be a future set name (perhaps SM10). In the old days we always knew set names months in advance because of trademark listings. The rest of the Internet recently discovered this, though they usually think the names are related to upcoming video game mechanics (tapu lel).
Both mini-sets will likely be combined into our May 2019 set in America and the rest of the world.
