“Giratina and the Sky Warrior” English / Japanese Comparison

Giratina and the Sky Warrior notes are below. Keep in mind these aren’t really about the plot, but the differences between the English and Japanese versions. The system behind the site isn’t ready yet, which is why it’s not up. :(

Discuss the movie here.

  • “The world of Pokemon! A spinning globe of wonderment…” The narrator says there could be 1000’s of Pokemon. ZOMG proof of future generations!
  • Magmortar and Rhyperior in the intro sound retarded.
  • Shaymin sounds like a talking Manaphy from just its first few “Mins,” almost like PUSA’s May.
  • Infi has a very professional voice though not quite the same “computery” sound effect as the Japanese voice.
  • Zero sounds much older and deeper than the Japanese voice but it’s still fitting.
  • Newton sounds way different than Mugen but the voice is still fitting.
  • Waiting to see how the intro is edited…
  • The English Pokemon logo is actually edited very well into the spinning water globe sequence. They painted out the Japanese Pokemon logo and replaced it with the English logo instead of ripping out the whole scene.
  • The movie logo is also embedded well into the intro, though they had to cut out part of the Japanese text that was embedded into the footage of the scene and replace it with a black vortex. Basically, the intro’s not butchered like Darkrai’s was. They put effort into it.
  • Shaymin sounds cocky before it has even talked. When it’s eating the pancakes it sounds like it’s taking pleasure in it, whereas the Japanese version it sounded like “I’m hungry I’ve been through a lot I need to eat something.”
  • Shaymin sounds like a high-pitched Pokemon USA May.
  • The dialogue is a little different from the Japanese version but it’s still pretty much the same meaning.
  • Commercial #1 of many.
  • Shaymin says “Dear” a lot. “Dear, where am I?”
  • Shaymin said THANK YOU!!! WHAT?! It’s a rude little brat in the Japanese version. It’s not supposed to say thank you. That’s what’s funny about it.
  • Well, at least it’s a little more blunt about how grateful everyone should be to it.
  • Shaymin’s going to the “Flower Garden” for “Flower Bearing.”
  • “IT’S GOING TO EAT MEEEE!!!”
  • Commercial #2.
  • Newton’s voice actor gives him a much funnier interpretation than the Japanese VA. (He’s also cocky like Shaymin.) Dawn calls him “humble” and Shaymin calls him a “weirdo.”
  • Shaymin calls Giratina a monster.
  • Shieldon sounds like Professor Namba.
  • Dialga and Palkia thought their territories had been “violated,” which is why they were fighting in the previous movie. Interesting choice of words.
  • Giratina has subtle grunts that weren’t in the Japanese version (when there is silence, that is). Dialga did too at the beginning of the movie.
  • Shaymin: “You people need to get on the ball!” XD
  • Oh, now I know! Zero sounds like Alberto from Darkrai. Not sure if it’s the same actor but the voice sounds similar.
  • Magnemite, Magneton, and Magnezone all have different voices. They have nasally, electronic voices.
  • Commercial #3. Ash and crew just jumped on the train.
  • Shaymin: “Certainly not.” “Chop chop.” Someone’s been living in Britain.
  • The husband on the train sounds way older, the large woman sounds like she’s high on sugar, and the wife has a fitting voice.
  • This is how you say Gracidea Flowers: “Grace-ih-dee-uh” flowers.
  • Shaymin Sky Forme has a completely different-sounding voice. It sounds way more masculine. In the Japanese version it simply sounds tougher between its Land and Sky Forme.
  • Brock: “Is it just me or have you changed a bit?” Shaymin: “It’s thaaaaaank Shaymin-time!” Ash: “It’s just you Brock. ^_^;;”
  • When Shaymin is flying through the air it sometimes screams “Weeeeeeeeeeeee!” It’s rather corny.
  • Commercial #4.
  • Commercial #5. Nothing to note between the two commercial breaks.
  • They sure can’t stay consistent with their pronounciations of Dialga and Palkia.
  • Zero has a corny laugh.
  • Newton already acknowledged Zero was using his invention, but then asks, “What is Zero up to?”
  • Giratina won’t be “killed” but “sacrificed.” Little less blunt.
  • Giratina will be “no more.”
  • Okay, seriously, Zero’s laugh is making me laugh. XD Who would approve that laugh?
  • Shieldon sounds like it’s saying “donkey-donkey-donkey.”
  • Brock, after being left behind again: “I’m starting to sense a pattern.”
  • Commercial Break #6.
  • Ash: “He can’t. He won’t.” JUST SAY IT ALREADY! GIRATINA WILL BE KILLED! Or, murdered rather.
  • Infi: “The system has just been hacked.” That made me LOL.
  • Commercial Break #7.
  • “You must pull through” instead of “Don’t die!”
  • “Giratina, stay with me” instead of “Giratina, live!”
  • Shaymin’s screaming during the revival is SOOO annoying. So was the Japanese version, but not as much.
  • “It was Shaymin who made you feel better” instead of “It was Shaymin who revived you.”
  • The death coverups are annoying. Death is a real part of life. You don’t have to mask it from kids, especially when it comes to cartoons. /opinion
  • Pretty good acting from Zero’s voice actor. “Look at all of you in your pathetic filthy world! You should all DISAPPEAR!”
  • Regigigas has the same sound effects.
  • They kept the “su” in “Regigigasu” instead of cutting it out. The Japanese have a hard time ending their syllables without vowels (it has to do with linguistics), so “Regigigas” comes out as “Regigigasu.”
  • THEY CUT OUT REGIGIGAS’ VOICE BEFORE IT APPEARS ON SCREEN! Grrrr.
  • UGHHHH!!! THEY CUT IT OUT ALL TOGETHER AGAIN!!
  • Now they lowered the volume when it’s yelling its name so the “oooo” of “su” wouldn’t sound so hard.
  • Commercial Break #8.
  • Again Zero has a very good voice actor.
  • Now they kept Regigigas’ voice in. Why would they take it out in the first place? Maybe PUSA received an earlier copy of the movie and the Japanese later added in Regigigas’ voice to some parts.
  • “I’ve had enough of you!!!” instead of “I’ll destroy you!!”
  • Infi still says “All systems down.” Yay!! The Japanese don’t have plurals, which is why she originally said “All system down.” PUSA fixed her grammar.
  • Regigigas’ voice is cut off a bit at the end.
  • Ash says “Hello down there” instead of “Yahooooooo!” The original was way off with the mouth flaps (2 syllables fitting like 6 mouth flaps), so PUSA actually improved Ash’s line.
  • YESS! They improved the movie again! In the original, the Shaymin were flying around and annoyingly screaming their names like crazy. PUSA cut it way down.
  • Dawn: “It’s the Sky Bouquet!”
  • Shaymin: “Farewell my good friends.”
  • Sarah Natochenny improved Ash’s crying a bit from the Darkrai movie. Still could use some work though.
  • We don’t get to hear the ending song.
