GameStop Now Selling Pokemon TCG Products Above MSRP Upon Release

GameStop has just listed the latest Pokemon TCG products on their website for higher than Pokemon’s retail price.

In recent months GameStop has been selling some Pokemon TCG products above MSRP after release, but this is the first time the company has ever sold products above MSRP upon release.

TPCi’s sell sheet lists the Prismatic Evolutions Super-Premium Collection for $89.99. GameStop has listed it for $99.99.

The Marnie or Steven “Rival Battle Decks” will cost $14.99 each. GameStop lists them for $17.99 each.

The Slashing Legends Tins are $26.99 each. GameStop has listed them for $29.99 each.

This latest move is following last week’s announcement that GameStop would discontinue preorders for Pokemon TCG products. It appears the company may be taking advantage of fans because stock is lower than demand.

This could cause a ripple effect wherein other big box stores also start selling product above MSRP. Some hobby stores may also take this as a signal to sell product for even higher prices than they already are.

Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and other big box stores have not listed the above products yet.

It’s unclear if TPCi has any direct or indirect control over the prices of big box stores. MSRP is the manufacturer’s suggested retail price.

I've lived in 2 European countries in the recent year, and basically every toy store with Pokémon products sold new products above MSRP. So that sounds normal. And I also expected this to sell for $150 or so at most places, because the recent UPCs were like 145-150 €.

About a decade ago, i remember the local toys r us selling pokemon above msrp even though there was a walmart right next to it which also carried cards. I guess it's just a thing that dying businesses do to wring out a little more money on the way out.

Toys R Us in the US used to sell booster packs for goddamn $6.50 before they shut down, which rn sounds reasonable
 
A bit slow on the announcement for this one, people have known GameStop overcharges for Pokémon TCG products for a while now.

As to why their doing it it's been mentioned in earlier articles, its because GameStop "believes" that overcharging spooks scalpers (protip: it doesn't) and because they can't keep up with the growing demand and have to get products from more distributors, some of whom charge more than wholesale price.

Boycotting GameStop won't help due to this problem having its roots in TPCi being run terribly. The only way to pass the message on is to get really rowdy in-person and physically showing how ticked off fandom is with the current situation.

An online petition or hashtag campaign? Please, every corporate executive knows they're worth less than the butt paper used to clean themselves.

Protesting outside of TPCi's HQ? A bit more effective but they could still call the Bellevue PD to tell you to go away.

Now protesting at Worlds? If it's enough to actually disrupt the event that would definitely leave a mark of shame on TPCi's face.

I'm honestly just waiting for someone to something stupid and actually [REDACTED] a scalper over this nonsense, especially if they use a wireless [REDACTED] to do it.

Almost all of the LGSs in my area, even those that host Leagues and other sanctioned events, are now selling TCG products for market value. It genuinely sucks.
