That sounds... weird. The thing is though, it's not actually that common here. When you do find it, it's really expensive and only certain parts of Canada make it well. :/
Like DOS said, you don't actually see too much maple syrup here. I've never really paid particular attention to it either, in honesty, so I'm not the best person to ask.

In Canada, it's like there's two separate entities. Aunt Jemima is just SYRUP. Other stuff from the boonies is MAPLE SYRUP.

For some reason, there's a principal at a sketchy school in my area that I've dubbed Aunt Jemima. His name sounded similar and he's the principal, so I decided to poke a little fun.
When there's a huge problem with *cough* sketchy stuff *cough* and it's going without punishment, I'd say it's pretty worthy of the nickname. He was also really boring. :U
Also, "American Sludge". That is the best term I have seen for syrup yet.
