Not every trainer gets a starter from a professor. In fact most trainers in the Pokemon world don't. They get them from befriending, fishing, saving, breeding, as a gift, etc. Perhaps one of your friends (Trevor) is a young child-genius professor. =P Who, for once, wants to actually fill out...

Then again (as someone earlier pointed out I think) it's Japanese name is Shishiko. So it may evolve into a Shishi. vs Both would be pretty awesome.
