No one said he was. It was inferred that he could later BECOME the professor, as he seems very knowledgeable, and not only gives you and your other friends the Pokedex, but checks and compares yours with his as your journey progresses.

Let's just end this and say that the inspiration for Noivern was taken from both fruit bats and wyverns and be done with it.

Genius has a good point. I can see where he's coming from, and it makes sense. Pokemon that levitate, or are naturally nor resting on the ground will get in, and then those with wings are a no-brainer.

I certainly think having a professor around the same ages as the protagonist would be interesting, perhaps even female, to sort of continue with the trend that I hope Juniper started.

I agree with this concept, but only if it changed colors and several features. For example, I'll use your Swellow. Imagine if Swellow were to become yellow and black/blue all over and it's tail feathers resembled lightning bolts, and it gained several thunderstorm related features to it's body...
