Hi there! This is a little recap of my tournament today (25-11-2012). So, lets get started!
So yesterday, I joined 1 of my friends at his place with another guy, and we tested our decks to see what we were going to play, and how well we did with those decks against the other tier 1 and 2 decks in the current format. First I tested a Tornadus/Boufallant/Landorus-Deck, but it didn't turn out well so I quickly switched it out with another deck. This deck was Rayeels. Rayeels seems to be the underdog in the current format unless you play against Keldeo which is probably the BDIF or at least the most hyped deck atm. But I made a Rayeels-deck, looked it through for missing parts, and started testing. I quickly found out that Victini wasn't needed. Yeah, I know, wierd but true. It just seemed as a dead card for me, since I never used Thunder Fang (or at least not enough for it to be usefull) and I seemed to avoid starting with Tynamo alot. Also changing a 50-50 chance of paralyzing too a 75-25 and adding a free prize for my opponent too take seemed stupid. So Victini out, a second Zekrom in. Then the fourth Catcher also seemed pointless since I normally would OHKO their attacker with Rayquaza EX, or at least target it. The Catchers were only needed for quick small OHKO's on Squirtles, to hit their Darkrai or Mewtwo on the bench, or just to stall. Now, I don't remember what I removed to add 2 DCE's but that fourth Catcher turned into a Mewtwo. The full list will be written down below. I had some last minute anxiety but ended up playing Rayeels without Victini.
This is the list I used at the Regional Tournament:
16 Pokémon:
3 Rayquaza EX
2 Zekrom
1 rayquaza DV
1 Mewtwo EX
1 Raikou EX
4 Eelektrik
4 Tynamo Thunder Wave
29 T/T/S:
2 Skyla
2 Bianca
4 N
4 juniper
2 Eviolite
2 Switch
3 Catcher
3 Ultra Ball
1 Computer Search
1 Tool Scrapper
2 Skyarrow Bridge
2 Level Ball
1 Super Rod
15 energy:
8 Lightning
5 Fire
2 DCE
Strategy and the deck itself
So, the main purpose of the deck is to setup Eels, and use Dynamotor to pump energies under your Rayquaza EX so that it may OHKO everything. You do this by discarding energies with Juniper, Computer Search, and Ultra Ball. You also want to find your Eels with level ball, ultra ball, and by drawing them with juniper and other supporters. Skyla is in there if you need a Catcher, too take a vital prize, Tool Scrapper, so that you may take out Darkrai etc. with only 3 energies by discarding their Eviolite, or to find an Ultra Ball to discard energies or to get your hands on Eels or other Pokémons.
The tournament itself
Alleroed Regionals 2012-2013!
This was the tournament I played today, and i truely hoped for the best as allways. the 2 hours in a car to get their were just perfect since we didn't get much sleep the night before because of all the testing we did. 2 hours sleep in a car and a deck made the night before the tournament. I can't see how this tournament can turn out bad!
I will from now on write my opponent's name (If i can remember it), their deck, and the percentage of me winning that specific match-up. the calculation of the percentage is made out of my own testing. The number to the left will be my own deck and the number to the right will be my opponents deck.
Round 1 vs - ???: Garchomp/Altaria 40%-60%
My worst match-up.. What a great start. Really, not kidding, it was a great start, i had rayquaza DV and a lightning energy, my opponent had a Swablu, and I got to go first, I told the judge to write me as the winner just as he said "Round 1 has now started". It feels good to dunk your worst match-up, cause I knew if he would have been able to setup, I would have been rolled over since i only take 1 prize each turn, where he takes 2. So we lay out good!
1-0
In between rounds I went around and checked what everybody else were playing. I saw 2 Keldeo decks, a few Darkrai/Hydregion decks, a Durant deck (OMG), some straight Darkrai decks, and Empoleon. I didn't get to see everybody's deck but I knew what I wanted to face and not to face, and how I should tackle each deck. A little tip, it seems obvious that knowing what your opponent is playing helps you winning, but make sure that you check what everybody else is playing so that you are prepared for the worst and how you should start against each player.
Round 2 vs - Stephan nørregård: Darkrai/Mewtwo 45%-55%
2 weeks ago I played against Stephan in another Regional tournament in the final and lost, so the time for my revenge was getting closer. He was also the third guy at Simon's (the friend whose house we stayed at) place.
He starts purely and so do I in a kind of way. With that I mean that i had an N but he also had a bad start, and playing N quickly and get a fresh new hand seems worth it since you need to get set up quickly, but leaving my opponent with a fresh new hand and the chance of playing a supporter himself instead of letting him use a supporter to get a supporter to get going seemed the better play, so i saved my N until he found a Juniper with Skyla, then I used it since i only had N in my hand and he would get going in the next turn anyway. Again, he draws purely, and I started smashing with quaza EX turn 3. Stephan takes a few prize but my Rayquaza EX had given me alot of prizes so in the end I won.
SWEET REVENGE! 2 rounds down 3 to go!
2-0
Round 3 vs - Simon Eriksen: Landorus/Darkrai 35%-65%
Soo, this was like the 4th time we meet each other in a tournament, first in a Battle Road which Simon won, then twice at a regionals 2 weeks ago where I won both of our matches and then today.
Pretty bad match, not only did I draw nothing, but he also started with a Landorus against 2 of my Tynamos. some easy prizes for him until my mewtwo hitted the field, it managed to do some damage but then he KO's mewtwo and my rayquaza DV and he turned out to win the game.
Meh, I can take it, I decided to beat him in the finals if I had the chance.
Lunch time, me vs. an egg sandwich and a toast 100% - 0%
Unfair match-up for the sandwich and the toast nothing else to say.
Round 4 vs - Jens Rysgaard: Keldeo/Blastoise 60%-40%
Finally a good match-up! By god that took a long time!
So I start out by finding 3 Tynamos and attaching an energy too my active Zekrom. Jens attaches a water too his Keldeo and pass. I get a few eels up, attaches fire for my Rayquaza EX on the bench, places Skyarrow Bridge, attaches lightning from my discard pile to Rayquaza EX, retreat my Zekrom, play Catcher and took a single prize on a Squirtle. Again, Jens attaches and pass. I retreat pump 2 lightning under Rayquaza EX with Dynamotor attaches a lightning from my hand, and played switch to get my Zekrom back on the bench so that my Rayquaza EX could get a OHKO on Keldeo. he makes a last go for it with a blastoise attack, but I KO it with second Rayquaza EX.
3-1
So 3 wins out of 4, last round now, if I win, then I will continue into the top 4 if I don't im a be sad.
Round 5 vs - Simon Øbro: Tornadus/Landorus/Bouffalant/Mewtwo/Terrakion 45%-55%
I started with a zekrom as my active and a Tynamo on my bench. I got to go first. I played a Level Ball and found a second tynamo, I think I also somehow got a Rayquaza EX, but I attach DCE to my Zekrom, and deals 40 to his only Pokémon which were Tornadus EX. He attach DCE, and played a Catcher and a Pluspower to KO 1 of my Tynamos. My turn, I believe I ended it in this turn by choosing Rayquaza EX as my active, then evolve my last Tynamo so I could use dynamotor and attach the lightning to my Zekrom, then I attached a lightning from my hand, played a Skyarrow Bridge, retreated my Rayquaza EX an KO'ed his Tornadus EX with Bolt strike for 240 damage.
I qualified for the top cut 2 regionals in a row yeah! Only this time, I wanted to make sure that I would go all the way.
the top cut ( top 4) decks and players:
Simon Øbro: Tornadus/Landorus/Bouffalant/Mewtwo/Terrakion 45%-55%
Simon Eriksen: Landorus/Darkrai 35%-65%
Søren Neumann (me): Rayeels 50%-50%
Emil Olsen Darkrai/Tornadus: 60%-%40
Simon went against Simon and I got to play against my best match-up of the 3 decks, Darkrai/Tornadus.
top 4 vs - Emil Olsen: Darkrai/Tornadus: 60%-40%
I got to go first. I started out with a Rayquaza EX, and I find 3 tynamos with Juniper, Level Ball and Ultra Ball. Then I attached and gave him the turn. He attaches to his Darkrai, retreats it, plays Energy Switch, and moves his darkness energy from Darkrai to his Sableye and picked up a few trainers he discarded with Juniper. I then get a few Eels up, another Rayquaza EX and then I have to pass after using Dynamotor to my new Rayquaza EX, he gets the turn, attaches to his Darkrai, uses Dark Patch aswell, and I believe he played energy switch? No matter what he ended up using Night Spear that turn. I then draw, attach lightning for my benched Rayquaza EX, retreated and KO'ed his Darkrai. From here on I can't remember alot of the game or the next 1 for that sake, but I ended up winning the first round.
In the second round it was looking great for me but I made a misplay when he KO'ed 2 of my Eels with Night Spear in the same turn. I attached a DCE for my Mewtwo, and forgot that I didn't have any Eels in play, but I had a Tynamo I then tried to get a Eel with my Ultra Ball but of course the last 1 were prized. My active now was a Zekrom with 110 damage on it and a DCE under it. I ended up winning since I was able to shuffle in 3 Fire energies with my Super Rod and then just attach them 1 by 1 for my Rayquaza EX until it was able to KO'ed his Darkrai for the last 2 prizes.
In the final once again! Now it was time for my revenge against Simon Eriksen! But sadly he lost. So instead of playing agaist a deck which would run me over, I played against a deck I had a bigger chance of beating. Not that, the switch there were bad or anything, but I had hoped to beat Simon in the finals.
The final vs - Simon Øbro: Tornadus/Landorus/Bouffalant/Mewtwo/Terrakion 45%-55%
I am sorry but I can't remember a whole lot from the finals except that it was a fantastic game. In the first round we switched prizes alot but in the end, I took the last prize and won. His Tornadus, which he had to start with, were 2 free prizes for me which ended up good. The second game was truely quick. Of course Simon decided to start himself, and I only had a Tynamo. he started with Terrakion EX so I felt safe. But he had a Skyla which game him a Ultra Ball so that he could play Switch, Ultra Ball for Landorus EX, attach and energy and win. Third game, I decided to start and had 2 Tynamos and a Raikou Ex, i attached a Fire energy to my Raikou and passed. Simon attached DCE, played a Catcher and a Pluspower and Ko'ed a Tynamo. I attached a lighting for my Raikou, evolved my Tynamo and dealed 60 with Thunder Fang and got heads so that his Tornadus EX were paralyzed he tried to get his Landorus up so that it could attack with Hammerhead, but he ended up double switching and attacked with Tornadus EX. My turn, I attached lightning for my Raikou EX and KO'ed his Tornadus EX, with Volt Bolt, after placing a Rayquaza EX on my bench. We then started switching prizes back and forth, and in the end he was 1 card away from winning but I took the last prize first.
I won! Yeah! 262 Championships Points now! Now there is only a couple of Cities left and then we will be heading for ECC!
Pros/Cons of the Tournament
Pros:
Of Course winning the whole thing.
Using Rayeels for the first time and still able to win.
dunking my worst match-up.
Cons:
Losing to Simon Eriksen.
Making a misplay, I know it happens but it almost costed my spot in the final
Losing to Simon Eriksen. (It is worse then you think)
All in All, Rayeels can be played but if you meet Landorus, prepare to lose, you are nothing without your eels, and I was abit lucky since I was able to setup 2 Eels in turn 2 in pretty much every single game. If Rayeels gets going, it will win. if not, well, then you lose.
Thanks for reading! Hope to see some of you at ECC!
