My friends and I had taken a break from the tournament scene for many years now, in fact, I had given up altogether. But then along came the release of Heart Gold and Soul Silver and this sparked my interest of the Pokemon TCG back to life, you see my first pokemon game was Pokemon Silver, I got it for my birthday a few weeks after its release after nagging my parents for a game since the release of the Pokemon Red and Blue games. I loved it, (but couldn't read very well at the time and Pokemon basicly taught me to read) I don't think I put it down for a few months, and even after that played it right up to when we all stopped playing(about a few moths after the release of Diamond and Pearl). it was the best game of my life and all of my best childhood memories come from Pokemon and I'm sure many of you reading this feel the same.

Anyway, enough on me, my friends and I felt the need to fork out lots of money on the new cards that came with the games as well as buying them for our DS's, most of us even tried our hands at tournament play but we all failed so miserably we just stuck to casual play, but as our group had work and college or sixform to deal with there wasn't much time together where we could play, gradually we stopped playing and focused more on collecting secretly away from our... more mocking friends and spent more time skateboarding, going out drinking or going to gigs.

Until one day my friend found out about this new formant we could try, the thirty card format, it took less time, less money(this quickly became a problem last time as we couldn't afford to spent 100 odd pounds for a few games) and would mean we could get loads of games in our lunchbreaks, a problem we had with the sixty card decks was solved instantly, it took to long, we could end up spending up to forty minutes in one game and as most of the time there were three of us it meant leaving one person out. with the thirty card format, games could be over in less than twenty minutes, meaning more games could be played. we talked it though and decided to give it a go. we played for ages, getting excited over the news packs, building crazy things and spending lots of money and time on this new format...

But then there was bad news.
the release of Pokemon Black and White, the rotation to BW-on format and worst of all... basics that could destroy everything we built.

So as we need to start again and buy the Black and White cards that we had been ignoring for quite some time, I thought I could ask on here about peoples opinions on the format, but also to post some of our favourite decks from the HGSS 30 card format.

so thanks for reading and I'm going to post the lists as replies to this post so they are separate, please fell free to post your thoughts, criticisms and opinions on the format and our lists as well as your own for either the HGSS format or the BW format.

We really want to make the thirty card format a more popular thing, it can be a fun new way of playing the game and be a good way to still be involved if you lack the funds for proper tournaments. we even got our girlfriends to build some decks and play now and then so it's a good way to introduce people into the amazing game that is Pokemon

^^

as promised deck list number one and the most played variant of all time, Donphan Prime, although this list won most games so I will post this one over my personal list(I teched a little more :S).

Pokemon: 8
Donphan Prime x2
Phanpy (1/1 HS/CoL) x2
Ursaring Prime x2
Teddiursa (UL) x2

Trainers/Supporters/Stadiums: 13
Switch x2
Pokemon Communication x2
Dual Ball x1
Junk Arm x1
PlusPower x1
Professor Oak's New Theory x2
Professor Elm's Training Method x2
Interviewer's Questions x1
Sage's Training x1

Energy: 9
Double Colourless Energy x2
Rescue Energy x2
Fighting Energy x5

so there you have it, the most popular build for the most popular deck, people played variants of this from the release of HGSS and it stuck right the way through. I may post some variants eventually but I thought it more appropriate to post the most achieved list as it were.
thanks for reading

Have you given any thought to LEGEND-based decks? Legend Box with 30-card decks is crazy good; if you have 2-4 Legends, you almost always hit one with a heck of a lot of energy on top of it. I remember playing in a similar format where the legends just dominated. Lugia Legend and Entei/Raikou Legend are some of the best plays, assuming this is a 3-prize format. Kyogre/Groudon Legend is also a fun one; you get multiple very viable ways of winning with the same card.

I guess I'd probably be doing something like this (completely untested as we were playing singleton with some of the BW sets):

Pokémon (8):
1-1 Kyogre/Groudon
1-1 Lugia Legend
1-1 Entei/Raikou
2 Manaphy

Trainers (12):
2 Legend Box
2 Junk Arm
2 Professor Oak's New Theory
2 Copycat
2 Judge
1 Energy Returner
1 Pokémon Communication

Energy (10):
2 Rainbow Energy
4 Water Energy
2 Lightning Energy
2 Fire Energy

I got kind of stuck on that last card... it could be the Communication to put the Legend pieces back, a Rotom for getting Legends out of the prizes, a Tyrogue for cheap damage, a Research Record for better Legend Box results, an extra energy, a Shaymin to manipulate all the energy better, etc. Shaymin, Rotom, and Tyrogue wouldn't be as effective without search though. You could even cut Manaphy down to one and fit some more cards in if you wanted to, provided you don't mind all the mulligans.
