Hello everybody! This is my fist tournament report, so it might be a little bad. I decided to throw together a 6 Corners the night before, because I knew that it would be very good against my meta, which was mostly ReshiPhlosion and Durant and a few other metagame decks. I lend literally every pokemon in the deck except for 2 Virizion and a Shaymin from some very generous friends. The Judge calls out that there will be 4 rounds and a Top Cut of 2, which a few of us groan too, knowing how annoying it is to bubble over from resistance.
Round 1 vs. Valentina with Reshiboar and Darmanitan
This game went pretty quickly. I started first with Zekrom and a pretty good start, and I got the turn 1 Double Draw. He started Darumaka, layed down a Reshiram and Tepig and passed. I started Glaciating turn 3, Catchering up whatever Tepigs he laid down to KO them. He never set up an Emboar, Darmanitan, or fully charged Reshiram. He said it was his first tournament, so I felt pretty guilty beating him. Sorry about that
1-0
Round 2 vs. Paz with ReshiPhlosion
Even though I knew this matchup was highly in my favor, I was very worried. Paz has gotten an invite to Worlds for the past 3 years in a row, and I haven't been able to beat him since I went on a huge donking streak with ZPST during Battle Roads. Anyways, I start first with Virizion to his Cyndaquil. I get the turn 1 Double Draw again, which I was pretty happy about. He started not so well, but he Collectored into a Vulpix, Cyndaquil and Reshiram. He passes. I immediately head for the Vulpix, knowing that if I get rid of his drawpower it would hinder him extremely. I place down Kyurem, Shaymin my energy from Virizion to Kyurem and Switch into Kyurem. I attach Rainbow and Eviolite to Kyurem and Catcher up Vulpix, KOing it with Outrage thanks to the damage counter from Rainbow. He brings up Reshiram and attaches a Fire to it. He Pokemon Communications for a Typhlosion, and he passes again, not being able to attack. By now I could tell he had a pretty bad start and an extreme energy drought. I manage to get the second Water onto Kyurem, drag up a Cyndaquil and use Glaciate, KOing the Cyndaquil and doing 30 to everything else. The game continued on like this, him drawing barely any Energy and me just Glaciate KOing the pokemon he attaches to. He doesn't get more than 5 Energy the entire game.
2-0
Round 3 vs. Warren with ReshiPhlosion
I was pretty confident about this game, as I had seen how much damage Kyurem could do.
Then I start Zekrom, Rainbow, 2 Junk Arm, 2 Switch, and Super Scoop Up.
2-1
Round 4 vs. ??? with Darkness.deck
I start first again with Virizion to his Deino. I Double Draw and Collector for 2 Terrakion and a Shaymin. He uses Collector for a Houndour and Purrloin which he puts down, attaches to Deino, and uses Headbutt. I attach a Rainbow energy to Virizion and use Leaf Wallop to do 40 damage. He evolves into Zweilous, attaches DCE and uses Strength, which puts Virizion at 40 health remaining. I lay down Terrakion, attach Fighting, Shaymin the Rainboe and Grass on to Terrakion and use Switch. I use Land Crush for the KO. I continue Land Crush KOing all of his basics until he runs out, with me at 2 prizes remaining.
3-1
Thankfully, Warren goes 4-0, making it so that it is between me and the person who Warren beat in the final round to decided who goes in Top Cut. There is a ton of time for the tension to build up as the final game which decides who wins off of resistance not only goes into turn 3 but proceeds into Sudden Death. On top of everything, the person who I didn't want to win had the game in his hands. He had 2 Magnezone set up, 1 active with a single energy attached and 1 benched with two energy attached. All of his energy are Lost Zoned or in the discard. He looks through his deck and there, right in his 3 card deck, are 2 Switch and a Copycat. He scoops, thinking he has no way to get to that other Magnezone.
Top Cut vs Warren:
Game 1:
I get a much better start than the last time I played him, starting Zekrom against Cyndaquil. I play it like I played against Paz, just sweeping the field with Kyurem and quickly KOing his only Vulpix. This game is over very fast, and I think he only took a single prize.
1-0
Game 2:
We play it out the same way as before, but he gets better set up, and I can't KO his Ninetales for about 3 turns after it is set up. He manages to kill my only Kyurem on the field early as I could not draw in to the other, and then he quickly kills my Virizion I had been keeping Energy on to Shaymin. I scoop, leaving more time for the 3rd game.
Game 3:
Plays out the same as Game 1, and I start Zekrom to his Reshiram. I realize how fragile my deck is, thinking that if he KOed my Kyurem or N'd me at the right time I would be in a very, very tight spot. Thankfully, he doesn't play N, and he doesn't manage to KO my Kyurem until I have another set up. Time is called when I have 2 prizes left to his 5, and he scoops.
I am very happy with winning! I manage to get some great pulls from my packs, pulling a Reverse Kyurem, a FA N, a Cobalion, and 2 Virizion.
Props:
- Zangoose and a bunch of other people lending me all the cards I needed. Thanks!
- 6 Championship Points
- Good pulls from my packs
- Zangoose coming in 2nd place in Masters with Troll.deck
- Winning without testing with a deck everyone says is not a deck you can pick up and win with without testing (Check. Mate.)
Slops:
- My awful start against Warren in Swiss
- Starting with Zekrom way more than I should have
- Realizing how fragile the deck was
- Freaking out before the tournament when I realized Afro wasn't coming so he couldn't loan me some cards
All in all, a very fun City!
