Discussion Amoongus Lock in Standard

I was looking at the new amoongus card in Steam Siege and wanted to try it out being a confusion card and all. However I don't think it would work that well in the current format due to the fact that it would be rather slow to get going and could only really guarantee a one for one exchange before getting knocked out Am I right with this assumption or can Amoongus do good in this format as a reliable stall strategy similar to toad or lazer.

Not sure about how good it will be (Water doesn't seem too good in the next format, but their is a couple fighting decks to counter), but it definitely is a cool idea with Vileplume and Revitalizer. With the buffs to fire (Volcanion), I can't really see a Grass deck doing well without a good Water deck to counter.

It needs a more reliable confusion method in order to work.

Fire loses so much in rotation though. Blacksmith, battle compressor really really kill the deck.

I actually gave a little thought to this the other day. In expanded, you could pair it with "Sporprise" Amoonguss from NXD (used to be paired with Ninetales back in the day). If every turn you can chain Devolution Spray, Super Scoop Up, or AZ (combined with Forest of Giant Plants) it might actually work. Problem with expanded is Kel/Stone, as well as switching cards in general, so I guess that's where Vileplume comes in. But then you have to AZ every turn no matter what, because you can either lift the item lock and play a SSU or Devo Spray, or just directly AZ the Amoonguss. And revitalizer whenever they manage to break the lock and KO an Amoonguss.

@socery, they lost Blacksmith which was huge and Battle Compressor which was meh (Decent for accelerating energy, but much better at accelerating supporters). What we are getting (In a few days), is a Pokemon that can discard a ton of Energy to boost your attacks, and a Blacksmith on legs. Sure, Fire probably isn't going to be tier 1-2 any time soon, but Volcanion is definitely going to be a decent represented deck (Not at big tournaments, but at local leagues and what not).

It needs a more reliable confusion method in order to work.

It literaly confuses and poisons a pokemon for one energy what more could you ask for reliability other than the old one that confuses when it evolved. Also noteworthy is the Malamar promo that treats all coin flips as tails but that it also slow to get going.

Ninja doesn't lose too much, except startling megaphone, which is kinda big. A lot of decks are planning to run Garbodor, practically any deck that can, will. You will also have to deal with more Sceptile decks (Seems like one of the more hyped decks) which can play under Garbodor and that matchup is a near instant loss. Sure, you can run the risk of hoping you either not run into Garbodor/Sceptile decks, or be able to deal with Garbodor/Sceptile before it is live, both of which are unlikely. If we get good tool removal then you might want to break back out Ninja, but until then, I will have to pass on the deck.
