I've been battling with my car lately, trying to get the radiator, ac compressor, belts, etc. repaired after I loaned it to my sister (she wrecked hers) who promptly broke the mentioned parts. Anyways, I've been so busy I completely forgot - it's Battle Road season! So, last night I looked around at the decks I was working on and had another realization - I didn't have the cards to finish any of the decks I had been working on. Great. So, I looked around and did some pondering and figured I'd just toss something together that I had the stuff for - DMRH (Donphan, Mewtwo, Rocky Helmet).
I honestly wasn't expecting to do well. I just was going to go and have some fun playing. So I went, and here goes:
Round 1: VS. Donphan/Terrakion
He starts Terrakion and I start Mewtwo. He attaches, drops a Phanpy, and passes. I drop a DCE and get a couple Phanpys on the bench with Dual Ball. I hit for 60. He goes, attaches to a benched Phanpy, and passes. I go and Catcher KO a Phanpy with a Plus Power. We proceed to exchange prizes until we're down to 2-4, my favor. Eventually we get into a Max Potion race. Yeah, a Max Potion race. With Junk Arms, we each played about 4, trying to deny the other prizes. However, I was taking 2HKO's with Rocky Helmet, while he could only 3HKO. I eventually win the prize race.
1-0
Round 2: VS. DarMAXitan
Definitely not a deck I expected to see. I start Phanpy to his Darumaka and Victini. I go first and get 2 more Phanpys, attach a {F}, attach a Rocky Helmet, and pass. He goes, drops a DCE on Darumaka, drops a Ralts on the bench, and hits me for 10. I get 3 Donphans on T2 as well as bench another Phanpy. Of course, I want to get rid of the Ralts before it becomes a problem, and since all of his pokemon now have 60 HP, I've got all the time in the world to do so. I Catcher KO the Ralts. He evolves into DarMAXitan and hits for 20, dealing 20 to himself due to Rocky Helmet and putting himself at 70 HP left. Perfect, seeing as I have a Plus Power in my hand. I KO it and KO the Victini for the game.
2-0
Round 3: VS. Darkrai/Tornadus
I know this is one of the better players in the area, so I'm kind of wary going into this one. I get a terrible start, and due to only getting 1 supporter in 15+ turns, him getting a perfect setup, him getting 5/6 heads on Crushing Hammer, and for a handful of turns me only swinging for 20 damage, it's not much of a match. Just a long string of bad luck. To top it off, just about everything I needed for the matchup was prized. However, I duke it out and have KO's set up on a Darkrai EX with 100 damage on it and a Tornadus with 100 damage on it. A single misplay cost me the game. I have a Mewtwo EX on the bench with no energy and a Phanpy active with 1 {F} on it. He has replaced my Ruins of Alph with a Skyarrow Bridge. I could have retreated with that 1, KO'd the Darkrai with Mewtwo EX + DCE from my hand for 2 prizes (I only had 4 left at this point while he had 1). I knew he didn't have any more energy, so he couldn't KO anything with Tornadus EX and I could X Ball for the game. However, for some unknown reason, my hand put down my other Ruins of Alph, demolishing the whole plan. Ugh, stupid misplay on my part. Oh well. He KO's Phanpy for the game.
2-1
Round 4: VS. Groudon/Terrakion + Heal
For the second time today, I start Mewtwo EX and my opponent starts Terrakion. He attaches an energy and passes. I attach a DCE, attach a bench a Phanpy, and attack. He goes, benches 2 Groudon EX's, attaches to one of them, and passes. I go and KO the Terrakion. He sends up the energized Groudon EX, attaches another and attacks. I go, attach an energy, and attack. He plays some healing cards and gets the damage down pretty low. He Giant Claws. I attach energy to Phanpy and attack. He Giant Claws again, just 10 damage short of KO'ing me, and he fishes for a healing card with a PONT to get out of my KO range. He just misses getting out of KO range, and all I've got nothing but a Switch in my hand. Things are looking grim. I draw and topdeck a Juniper. It sets me up very comfortably, and I proceed to destroy his field and everything he benches. He scoops.
3-1
I miss Top Cut of 2 by 10% because the only guy I lost to went 4-0, but the only other guy whose only loss was to the 4-0 had higher opponents' resistance (I know, right?) so I missed. The last game of the last round was between the guy I beat in Round 1 and the guy the other 3-1 beat in Round 1. If my guy had won, I would've been in Top Cut. But alas, he lost, and I got a bronze Victory Cup. Eh, not bad for just winging it! I even got some pretty good pulls in my packs!
Props:
