if u hav two or mor basic pokemon in ure hand at the start of the game, do u play one as the active pokemon and the others face down on the bench?

Well... yes... if you want to...
You can choose to put the others down on the bench whenever you want to, either before the game in setup, or during your turn. Some cards (Like Absol EX) you would want to keep in your hand until the time is right to put it on your bench. Hope that explains things.
