Today is a good day I think to walk through the art of a classic Pokémon: Venusaur.

Here we have Venusaur's debut card. Nothing real special, an early more generic Arita illustration. Next:

Unlike the other starters, Venusaur didn't get a Dark version in the original TR set, so its next appearance was in Gym Challenge. In these 2 sets, Sugimori went through a phase of sticking the Pokémon on the right side of the box... as seen with Venusaur here. It looks pretty nice, but bland, as 60% of the box is just holo. A nice little promo card... nothing real special here, just another Sugimori pic.... NEXT:

Eeeeeew.... Nishida's Expedition card's artwork is... not very good. (IMO) Fortunately, the other Expedition Venusaur looks much better:

Ah. Very impressive CGI work, I must say. I like the little Pokéball it's stepping on....

AAAAAAAHHHHH!!!! Need I explain the horror? Ugh.... Now, the EX series!!!!!

Ah. A nice piece of work, but I don't think it can beat the other CGI Venusaur... Oh well.

Yes. An excellent modern Arita, featured in POP2. I love the pose of this card... He's comin' right atcha!!!!
There's a new Venusaur card coming out in Crystal Guardians... but I have no scan of it. If someone could provide one, I'll review it here.
Well, here's the final results:
BEST:

POP2!!!!!
Ah... how I love Mitsuhiro Arita's work... :D But that Expedition CGI Venusaur is a runner-up.
WORST:

Shini-Ichi Yoshida promo!!!!!!
No competition there.... I mean, just look at the thing!!! Ugh.... But that Nishida one is the runner-up.

Well, hope you enjoyed the art history of Venusaur! If you want a website with every single scan of every single card, simply go to this website: http://www.pokemon-paradijs.com/ruilkaarten/ruilkaarten.php I'll try to do these as often as I can, but I invite anyone who wishes to do their own to do so! Just, nobody do the same Pokémon twice....

Until next time, Tomo K is signin' off!

as a sugimori-fan, I'd have to choose Erika's, the background lmight just be holon, but it makes it look so good

oh, and the worst is ofcourse the phantom-y dark venusaur

anyways, good job

oh, and I'll do the mew soon, so don't do it...

Don't forget the Japan-only Shining Mew....

ofcourse, and the mew ex promo, and ________'s Mew, and some others

Accidentally voted Nishida, meant to vote Yoshikawa.

In depth:
Base Set - One of Arita's better early ones, if you ask me. Almost up there with the Dragonair.

Gym Challenge - Sugimori's work stands out as too generic for me, though that's mainly because we've all seen his work before.

Sugimori Promo - Same.

Nishida Expedition - Nishida is far and away my favorite artist, and that Venusaur is one of the only bad drawings he's ever done. (the other ones being the deformed Aquapolis Chansey and the ugly Vending Mewtwo)

Yoshikawa Expedition - Why'd this guy vanish? This is utterly fantastic, and easily beats most of the CG we see today.

Yoshida promo - DEFORM'D. Worst of Yoshida, worst of batch.

Fire Red/Leaf Green - It's all right, though the Expedition one is still better.

POP2 - Pretty good, with a nice pose.

Crystal Guardians - Blech. Not as bad as Dark Venusaur, but definitely the runner-up.
