Ruling baby pokemon

Yes. It's an Evolved Basic Pokemon.

So for card effects and all, this "evolved Basic" is treated as both Evolved and Basic, right? Like, an Evolved Basic can use Boost Energy (can only be attached to evolved) and is affected by Space Center (affects non-ex Basic Poke-Bodies). Or do cards that only affect Basic Pokemon not affect this Evolved Basic? Man, that sounds confusing...

I know it doesn't matter once that Evolved Basic evolves into a Stage 1, but I've always been curious about the first part.

EDIT: Nevermind, I found the ruling:

Q. If I use "Baby Evolution" to evolve Pichu into Pikachu, or Wynaut into Wobbuffet, is the resulting Pokémon (Pikachu, Wobbuffet, etc.) considered an "Evolved Pokémon", or is it still considered as a "Basic Pokémon"?
A. Any time you evolve a Pokémon into another stage, it is considered to be an "Evolved Pokémon", even if the words written on the card say "Basic". Alternatively, the quick and dirty way to figure this out is...is there a Pokémon underneath it? If yes, then it's evolved. Likewise, when you use an attack like Kabuto's & Omanyte's "Team Assembly" to bring other Kabutos and/or Omanytes onto the bench, they are to be treated as "Basic Pokémon", even though the words written on the card say "Stage 1". Is there a Pokémon underneath it? If not, then it's basic. (Jan 22, 2004 PUI Rules Team)

A_A - That's exactly right. Evolved Basics can use Boost and get owned by Space Center.

Señor - No. It's still a Stage 2 because it's Stage 2.

Think of it like this. There are two groups of classes when finding out what a card is, divided into two groups as such:

Evolved Pokemon / Basic Pokemon

Basic / Stage 1 / Stage 2

Now let's use Pichu's line as an example. If I have a Pichu in play, it's a Basic Pokemon for two reasons:

1. No card is underneath it
2. It says "Basic" on the card

Easy, right? Literally, it's a Basic Basic Pokemon, but one Basic is redundant so it's left out. Now let's "evolve" it into Pikachu. There is at least 1 card underneath Pikachu, so it's now an Evolved Pokemon. That's one group. Pikachu's card says "Basic" on it (for the other group), so it's now an Evolved Basic Pokemon.

If you evolve it into Raichu...

Raichu has at least one card under it, so it's an Evolved Pokemon. Raichu's card says "Stage 1" on it, so it's a Stage 1 Evolved Pokemon.

Now, using Omastar as another example:

Mysterious Fossil is a Basic Basic Pokemon (no cards underneath it, and the effect says to treat it as a Basic Pokemon while in play.)

If you skip Omanyte and use Rare Candy to get Omastar directly into play, what would it be?

Answer: Same as if you had evolved it from Omanyte. Omastar has at least 1 card underneath it, so it's an Evolved Pokemon. Omastar says "Stage 2" on its card, so it would be a Stage 2 Evolved Pokemon.

And finally, what about cases involving Archie and Maxie? I'll use Team Aqua's Walrein as an example.

Let's say I Archie one of those into play. What would that be?

This Archie'd Team Aqua's Walrein has no cards underneath it, so it would be a Basic Pokemon. Team Aqua's Walrein has "Stage 2" written on it, so it would be a Stage 2 Basic Pokemon.

Understand? I hope the coloring helps. :)

Again, easy to figure out once you know how to classify them.

Hyper Claws/Nectar Pod

To get bonus: defender must be Stage 2 Evolved Pokemon

How to check: Is there a card underneath the target? If yes, target is Evolved. Does the target have "Stage 2" on its card? If yes, target is Stage 2. If both questions were answered yes, the target is a Stage 2 Evolved Pokemon.

Examples of Stage 2 Evolved Pokemon

Venusaur
Omastar
Pidgeot

Cross-Cut

To get bonus: defender must be Evolved Pokemon

How to check: Is there a card underneath the target? If yes, target is an Evolved Pokemon, and extra damage is awarded.

Examples of Evolved Pokemon

Sandslash
Omanyte when evolved from Mysterious Fossil
Pikachu when evolved from Pichu

Intimidating Armor

To get bonus: defender must be Basic Pokemon

How to check: Is there a card underneath the target? If no, target is a Basic Pokemon, and can't use powers or bodies. If yes, does the top card have "Basic" on its card? If yes, target is a Basic Pokemon, and can't use powers or bodies.

Examples of Basic Pokemon

Omanyte when put into play with an attack or Stadium card
Pichu
Pikachu when evolved from Pichu

Yes. Jynx says "Basic" on its card, so it's a Basic Pokemon.

If Jynx is evolved from Smoochum, it's Evolved, too, so in this case it's an Evolved Basic Pokemon. :)

Ruling for what?

No, not at all. Intimidating Armor says that if they are a Basic Pokemon, they can't do their stuff.

So look at the top card. If it says "Basic" on it, it's a Basic Pokemon. It doesn't matter if it's a Basic Basic Pokemon (no cards underneath) or an Evolved Basic Pokemon (Pikachu when evolved from Pichu via Baby Evolution).

Where's the loophole? If it says Basic on their card, they're affected by Intimidating Armor. If not, they aren't. Simple.

Ah, yes, I guess I wasn't clear enough there. I edited my post.
