I'm not sure where exactly I would post such a question, but...

Can someone explain the concept of base stats? I've heard the term flying around everywhere, but I've never been able to understand it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, mods, if this thread needs to be somewhere else, feel free to move it - I just thought a general pokemon-related question would go here.

Base stat is a general idea of what a Pokemon's stats are. The higher the base stat is for a Pokemon, the higher its resulting stat will become. You plug the base stat into a formula to find the actual stat. (The formula for HP is different than the rest.) I'll give an example.

Metagross's base Attack is 135. With Adamant nature and maxed EVs dumped into the Attack stat, its highest possible attack is 405.
Dragonite's base is 134 instead, and the highest possible, using the same method, is 402.

Sorry, that comparison was the first one that came to my head, but the gist is, the higher a base stat, the higher the resulting stat will be.

Base stat of 90 in an area is good, 110 is better, and 130 is excellent.
