My opponent and I draw our first 7 cards, and I get a basic and play it down and put the 6 prizes down, and my opponent doesn't get a basic and has to draw 7 cards again. If the 8th card I draw (that I got to draw because my opponent didn't get a basic) is a basic, can I play it onto my bench before flipping the coin to see who goes first?

Of course you can. However, that pokemon can't become your new active pokemon.
