Ruling Battle Step

Do you have to attack during your Battle Step or are you able to choose to not to attack and pass? It does not say anything in the rule book, it gives the impression that the active player must go through all the steps in the turn yet, others say otherwise. What is the verdict?

you do not have to attack if you don't want to, unless one of your or your opponent's cards say that you must attack.
