BW-on: Chomptaria! (Updated! 8/12/12)

With the release of the new and much-hyped Dragon-type, people are wondering which variant will come out on top: Garchomp Altaria, Rayquaza Eelektrik, or Hydreigon Darkrai? I am no exception, and am trying to make the best of the new type. The main gimmick of Dragon-types is that they are powerful Pokemon that are only weak to themselves, but the tradeoff is that they require multiple types of energy to attack. My goal is to perfect the power of the Dragon Pokemon, but I can't do it alone! Today, I bring to you Chomptaria, the combination of Garchomp and Altaria. The strategy of the deck is to use Emolga to get out the Basic forms of Garchomp and Altaria, Gible and Swablu and then, once Gible has evolved into Gabite, use Gabite's Dragon Call Ability to bring Garchomp out. Once Swablu has evolved into Altaria, it gains the Fight Song ability, which raises the base power of Dragon Pokemon by 20 for each Altaria in play. Use this combined with Garchomp for the opportunity to OHKO almost anything! Here is my current decklist.

Pokemon: 22
4 Gible (2 DR 86) (2 DR 87)
4 Gabite (DR 89)
4 Garchomp (DR 90)
4 Swablu (DR 104)
3 Altaria (DR 84)
3 Emolga (DR 45)

Trainers: 31
3 Professor Juniper
4 N
3 Bianca
1 Switch
2 Super Rod
1 Random Reciever
1 Rare Candy
2 Tool Scrapper
4 Level Ball
4 Pokemon Catcher
2 Tool Scrapper
2 Max Potion
1 PlusPower

Energy: 10
4 Blend Energy {W}{L}{F}{M}
6 {F} Energy

3 words: I appreciate feedback! I'm definitely no expert in the TCG as I've not been playing for a year, but I would love to hear from people who are more experienced than me.

Edit #1: Courtesy of Puff, I've replaced Cheren with Bianca and took out the PlusPowers for 1 Switch and 1 Gabite.
Edit #2: Courtesy of Mora and RobertBenjamin, taken out 2 Switches for an Emolga and a Tool Scrapper. I've also taken out 2 Rare Candies for another Altaria and another Tool Scrapper.

RE: BW-on: Chomptaria!

The only obvious problem I see is that you don't have 4 gabite.
I think you should run Bianca over Cheren, since it's better overall.
I'd take out the Pluspowers for Switch, as it greatly helps your Accelgor matchup.

Updated. Played a game with this variation. Even though I lost 5-0 to Klinklang Registeel, this was because of an avoidable mistake and Bianca saved me at one point.

RE: BW-on: Chomptaria!

Take out one Swablu and replace it with Emolga. Emolga is the best starter for this deck.

4 Gabite isn't necessary, you only need three since you are running 3 Rare Candy. I would replace it with a Random Receiver for consistency.

I'd probably drop 1 switch and 1 level ball for either 2 Tool Scrappers or 1/1 Tool Scrapper/Fighting Energy. Garbordor and tools will see action in Battle Roads so its better to be prepared.

Yuta qualified for Worlds with just 3 Gabites, 3 Level Balls and zero Max Potions.

RE: BW-on: Chomptaria!

Pretty good list. I don't think the Switch is necessary considering none of your Pokemon have more than one Retreat. I understand Accelgor, but I've never actually seen an Accelgor in my meta. If yours is teeming with them, fine, but I'd sooner up Max Potion than put in Switch, but I certainly wouldn't run more than two. Personally, I'd use the extra space from Switch for another Emolga and Juniper. Three Emolgas gives you better odds of starting with it, and it searches out Swablus which Gabite can't.

I think I'll take out 2 Switches for an Emolga and a Tool Scrapper. I typically am up against Klinklang Registeel, Shedinja, and Garbodor and haven't even seen an Accelgor deck. And considering I usually have 2 energies on Garchomp in case the need to use Dragonblade comes along, that would be a good idea. Here's another thing that I'm striving for. I'd love to run a 4th Altaria. Having 4 Altarias out at once means that I can OHKO anything in the format, spare Eviolite EXs and Wailord, which nobody runs. I'm thinking that I'll take out 2 Rare Candies (considering Gabite being able to get out Garchomp fairly easily) in exchange for the 4th Altaria and another Tool Scrapper. I'll be honest, I'd much favor N over Juniper because with Juniper, you'll often end up discarding a lot of cards and often end up decking yourself, which I've done an unfortunate amount of times. I'll update the list right away. Thank you both for the feedback!

RE: BW-on: Chomptaria!

It's a good idea in theory, but you will almost never get out all four at once. With Catcher and Raikou, it's difficult to keep just three out.

And if you're decking yourself, you're probably using Dragonblade too often and burning resources. I have never decked myself with this deck. The only time I use Dragonblade is when it gets a OHKO, or I can't 2HKO with Mach Cut. There are some games where I don't even have to use Dragonblade.

RE: BW-on: Chomptaria!

So I have a question. If I take out the 4th Altaria, would I need the 4th Swablu as well, or can that go too? Because if that's the case, I might just replace them both with 2 PlusPowers. Then I could just use them when there's a Mewtwo or Registeel that I can OHKO just by using the extra PlusPower.

RE: BW-on: Chomptaria!

I run a fourth Swablu because they're so easily KO'd. With 40 HP and the {L} Weakness, I expect at least one of them to be KO'd. The beauty of it, though, is that if they KO two Altarias, you can use one Super Rod to get back two Altarias and one Swablu. You should have a spare Swablu still in your deck unless it was prized or KO'd as well.

RE: BW-on: Chomptaria!

I would play Gible 86 if I were you. At least two of them. In my Garblu, I play two of each, and it works perfect. Against the mirror match, it's good to set up three Altaria and a Gible 86, because it can OHKO Garchomp for only a colorless.
