Can I Verify that this Deck will be Legal Post-Rotation?

Hey! I'm new to the Pokemon TCG, and I just wanted to make sure that my first deck will be legal for the coming year, as I know a rotation is imminent. Have I included any cards that are rotating out, or am I good to go? Thanks a lot!

4x Vespiquen
4x Evee
2x Flareon
2x Vaporeon
2x Jolteon
4x Unown
2x Octillery
1x Spinarak
1x Ariados

4x Acro Bike
4x Battle Compressor
3x Ultra Ball
2x Level Ball
2x VS Seeker
2x Muscle Band

1x Trainer's Mail
4x Professer Sycamore
1x Lysandre
1x Ace Trainer

3x Forest of Giant Plants

4x Double Colorless Energy

In the Pokémon TCG, Pokémon (as opposed to Trainers and Energy cards) often share the same name but have very different effects. You might want to specify which versions of these cards you are using. Be really silly to give you the okay and find out your deck is illegal because you're using the wrong Combee. ;)

Though right now I am seeing Muscle Band, and unless I missed a promo reprint that hasn't been released since the original XY set and thus will be rotating out.

Right, my apologies!

I'm planning on using the following:

Evee - Furious Fists
Eveelutions - Ancient Origins
Combee - Ancient Origins
Vespiquen - Ancient Origins
Unown - Ancient Origins
Octillery - Breakthrough
Spinarak - Ancient Origins
Airiodas - Ancient Origins

I'm fairly certain all of those are legal, but I'm less sure about the items. Do they rotate just like Pokemon, or are they always legal?

The only thing that is "always legal" are basic Energy cards, and I am not sure if that is a special rule or just because they are constantly reprinted. When players talk about "rotation" in Pokémon, they mean Pokémon TCG sets, also known as "expansions". So for example, XY: Furious Fists is an entire set or expansion. When it "rotates" out of Standard play, the entire set is gone: Pokémon, Trainers, and Energy. The exception are reprints, but that happens on the basis of individual cards. Let us look at XY: Furious Fists for some examples:

  • Korrina has only been released as XY: Furious Fists 95/111 and 111/111. When XY: Furious Fists rotates from Standard play, so does Korrina unless they re-release her card in a future set (at which point older copies become legal).
  • Strong Energy was first released as XY: Furious Fists 104/111, but has also been released as XY: Fates Collide 115/124. When XY: Furious Fists rotates out of (leaves) Standard play, so long as XY: Fates Collide doesn't go with it, Strong Energy will remain legal.
September 1st, the current Standard Format (XY: Kalos Starter Set and later expansions plus all XY: Black Star Promo cards) will change, becoming XY: Primal Clash and later sets plus XY: Black Star Promos XY36 and after. You can read the official announcement, which lists the sets individually, including some more obscure mini-sets, here. Odds are they, PokéBeach... actually most Pokémon TCG sites will sooner or later post a list of all individual cards that remain legal because of reprints. Until then you can use the card database there to look up cards by name and see if they have reprints. I mean, if you don't want to wait for someone to be nice and answer here. ;)

So based on what I just said, that Eevee is going to rotate out of Standard play. Expanded did not lose any sets this year, so it remains Black & White and later expansions plus all BW: Black Star Promos and XY: Black Star Promos.

Thanks so much, this is really helpful information! However, it does essentially mean that the deck I had planned to build doesn't work anymore As I currently understand it, there will be no Standard legal Evee :(

There is an Ancient Origins Eevee

Also both Battle Compressor and Muscle Band rotate

Ah, so there is!

Still, the evolution ability was very useful and Battle Compressor was a pretty key part of the discard engine, so the deck seems a lot worse without those cards :(

Could you recommend any other Vespiquen or Airiodas synergies I could build around? Isn't there a card that deals extra damage if the defending Pokemon is affected by a special ability? Could Vespiquen fit into that deck?

Could Vespiquen fit into that deck?

Are we discussing Vespiquen (XY: Ancient Origins 10/98)? That is the one most people use, but that same set has another Vespiquen (XY: Ancient Origins 11/98). The second one is no where near as good.

Anyway, I ask because if you check out the front page news updates, Karen has officially been confirmed for release in the new Battle Arena Deck, Keldeo VS Rayquaza. Karen shuffles all Pokémon from each player's discard pile into his or her deck. So... Vespiquen is going to be a lot weaker after September 21st (the official release date) for casual play, or October 7th for tournament play (if I counted correctly, that is the third Friday after the release).
