Card ratio experiment

Hey guys. So being a huge math nerd, I'm always thinking about math related things in the TCG. One thing I've been wondering for a while without solid evidence is regarding rare cards in packs. In particular, with the previous expansion Unleashed, I noticed that the Booster Box ratios were fairly set in stone, and that they were rather disappointing in comparison to the ratios of the HG/SS set. As a result, my friend made the comment, "I'll probably just buy single packs from Wal-Mart/Target from now on." So, my question is: Is there a difference in rare cards acquired when buying booster box packs vs. sealed packs? But to do this, I need your help in both setting up the experiment and participation.

First, a few important questions need to be asked regarding setup.
  • What counts as a booster box pack, and what counts as sealed? The following is my description for a sealed pack:

"Sealed booster packs indicates packs that come packaged in some sort of plastic casing. These include single booster packs, blister packs, and poster packs from Wal-Mart, Target, etc. All other booster packs that do not come wrapped in a plastic covering most likely originated from a booster box and are therefore unsealed."

Are there any other important cases I'm missing? And is the second assumption about everything else coming from a booster box too broad?
  • What should I collect data on? Right now, I intend to ask about Primes, Legends, and Alph Lithographs. From these, I can determine the number of packs to get a Prime, Legend, Alph Lithograph, or any one of the three. Is this good enough?
