I stick with Eelzone for this Cities, since I got Top 8 and Top 2 the last two times I played it. Those are pretty good finishes, and I was too lazy to test anything else anyway. I stuck with my list from last time, except I dropped the fourth Rare Candy for a 4th Magnezone. I ended up with too many Rare Candy in my deck/hand a lot of times, and with Sage the fourth Magnezone almost felt necessary. Anyway, let's get right to it!
As a side note, this tournament happened last Sunday, but I was too lazy to type up a report until now. Some of the details might be a little hazy, and I didn't proofread it either, so there might be spelling and grammar errors.
Round 1 vs one of my PTO's with Virizion/Feraligatr/Kyurem/Golduck
So yeah, one of the PTO's decided to play today, and he was using a pretty crazy version of Feraligatr/Kyurem. I get off to a horrible start going second, and he gets a T2 or T3 Glaciate. I pull his energyless Feraligatr up with Catcher, and he can only get two energy on it. He doesn't play a supporter, so I know his hand is dead. I finally manage to topdeck a Communication and pull a Magnezone out. That Magnezone turns into two Magnezone and an Eelektrik on the same turn. My only 40HP Tynamo already has 30 damage on it from Glaciate, as does my Eelektrik. Basically read this situation as if he gets two more Glaciates off, it's over. And he has two fully charged Kyurem benched. Here, I made a picture of the scenario for something else lol.
Anyway, I'm faced with a choice. I know his hand is dead. I have to kill one of the charged Kyurem on his bench before it gets to attack. I can do three things. I can pass the turn, hope he doesn't topdeck a draw supporter, energy or switch, and then hope for a way to get a second Eelektrik out the next turn so he can't kill it with the Glaciate he uses. I can also Catcher a Kyurem, KO it with Magnezone, and let him kill the Tynamo, forcing me to survive the rest of the game off one Eelektrik. Or, I can Catcher the Kyurem, N him, and hope he doesn't get the three energy AND hope I get the Eelektrik.
I opt to go with option three, which was probably the worst choice I could have made. I do draw the way to get Eelektrik (Communication + Thundurus), and get that out. I use Lost Burn on the Kyurem without the Rescue, just in case he decides to Rain Dance his energy elsewhere. He actually does do just that, lacking the Collector or Communication to get another Kyurem out. He then proceeds to play an Oak's and Glaciate. I Lost Burn this Kyurem for the KO, too, but it has a Rescue on it. So, it goes back to his hand. If he can get three energy on it, he wins. If not, he probably still wins, but at least I have a ray of hope. He proceeds to promote Virizion, bench the Kyurem, Rain Dance two energy on it, and then play Oak's. If he gets the energy, I'll scoop. He hits it on his second card. One very small misplay most people wouldn't even have thought about ends up costing me the game. Well, the bad hand was really sealed my fate, but still. This just goes to show how important it is to play perfectly in any game.
0-1
Round 2 vs Zane N with Kyurem/Cobalion/Electrode/Terrakion
So a lot of people ended up playing Chandelure today, so it's looking like my day is over. I'm expecting my first round opponent to go 2-4 or so, and I'm doubtful I'll dodge all the Chandelure if I do make it back to the top tables. Zane says he and his girlfriend played first round, and she donked him. However, CaKE is a generally good matchup for me, so I might at the very least be able to win this round.
Anyway, I end up with a similar opening hand as in round one. However, he ends up whiffing his first Energymite completely, despite using Research Record beforehand. This forces him to attack with Cobalion. He uses Energy Press or whatever it's called to KO my 40HP Tynamo I was trying to use to paralyze stall. It almost worked, but I flipped tails lol. So I have no more 40HP Tynamos, and he's slowly building up a Kyurem on the bench. I promote the only card on my bench, Magnemite, and then topdeck a Rare Candy to turn it into a Mangezone. However, it has no energy on it, so I'm forced to attach, bench a Tynamo, and pass. He only has one energy on the Kyurem, and has no Voltorb benched, so it's still a safe play. I wish I could have gotten a Collector off of Magnetic Draw (for double Tynamo and another Magnemite), but all I hit was N. I N him into a great hand, and he gets Voltorb out, as well as another Kyurem, an attachment on his first Cobalion, and some other great stuff. However, I N his Shaymin and Switch away (he could have used it to move energy to Kyurem and Glaciate my Tynamo after playing Switch) and he can't play them back. So, he just Iron Breakers for 60. My hand is still horrible. However, I get Eelektrik out and attach to the active so I can Lost Burn to KO Cobalion. I proceed to do that, and then about halfway through his turn we both realize he Iron Breakered. I scoop the game up at that point, because it would be a major headache to rewind and I wasn't going to cut anyway. Besides, I was in a pretty bad position. We play again for fun and he beats me.
0-2
Round 3 vs some random guy with Reshiram/Zekrom/Audino/other random basics
He ends up going first to my lone Magnemite. He has an Audino out, so I'm like crap. However, he opts to attach the DCE to his benched Zekrom for some reason. I have a workable start this game (still no draw supporter, but I manage to get a T1 Collector and T3-ish Magnezone), and I start pressuring his weak setup right away with Disaster Volt. I go up about three prizes with that before he finally KOs it with a Bolt Strike. I promote a Zekrom of my own and Bolt Strike back. He then promotes Audino with a DCE, and flips double heads to put my Zekrom at 120. He says that's exactly what he didn't want, since it puts everything on his field into Outrage OHKO range. His bench has no energy on it and he has no one-energy attacks left. However, it really wouldn't have mattered, since I was fully setup with two Magnezone and two Eels on the bench. I proceed to Outrage KO the Audino. He tries to setup a V-Create Victini on the bench, but I Catcher that and Outrage it while it has one energy. He finally manages to KO my Zekrom with Tackle from some random Pokémon, but I'm at two prizes at that point. I still have all 13 energy to Lost Burn, and two Magnezones to do it. I Lost Burn two to KO whatever he killed my Zekrom with (sorry, I don't even remember anymore.) He can't do anything to my Magnezone, so I Lost Burn his Reshiram for 500 damage. Gg.
1-2
Round 4 vs Rikko with Magnezone/Eelektrik/Thundurus/Zekrom
I swear, my last round was so embarrassing. I was at the second to last table, and I had to keep reminding my opponent to draw for his turn and stuff. It was nice to see one other good player at 0-2 (strange as that sounds); Rikko was sitting two tables over from me. He won as well, and of course we end up playing each other next round.
I end up going first with a lone Magnemite active. I don't have a draw supporter in my hand, but I have Collector, Switch, two Lightning, and Rare Candy + Magnezone. So, against all odds, I pull off the T1 Charge. Rikko gets more bad luck, and can't do much with his hand. I'm able to basically sweep with Thundurus and my T2 Magnezone, which leads to a full setup of double Magnezone and double Eelektrik. I sweep him without much competition, although he finally manages to KO my Thundurus with a manually charged Zekrom.
2-2
Round 5 vs Kenny W with Zekrom/Pachirisu/Shaymin/Tornadus
So, my resistance actually took a random turn for the better. I was right about my first round opponent, who went 2-4, and I don't have much faith in my first round opponent. However, I'm confident Zane will go 5-1, Rikko will go 3-3, and Kenny will go 3-3 if I manage to beat him. It's remotely possible I'll still cut, because rumor is it will be like last weekend where four 4-2's make it.
Kenny wins the coin flip, and I open lone Thundurus with a great hand. Or great for my luck. It had two lightning, a Collector, and two Sage's Training. Chances are I'll get the T2 Magnezone, although going second to Zekrom makes this a pretty bad matchup. I don't end up having to play it, though, because he Collectors for Pachi, Self-Generates, two Lightning, Shaymins them over, attaches a third, and Bolt Strike donks me. Pretty lame way to end my day, and this was also my second time getting Zekrom donked by a god hand in two weeks. Oh well.
2-3
Round 6 vs ??? with Magnezone/Eelektrik/Thundurus/Zekrom
This guy is a friend of my friend, and it's only his second or third tournament. He's been having some trouble remembering everything involved in the game. He put too many Sage's Training cards in his hand a couple rounds ago, where his opponent gave him a lot of crap but eventually let him fix it, then accused him of cheating and discarding a lightning his hand he didn't draw off the Sage. Drama aside, I feel pretty confident. 2-4 would be the worst finish I've ever hade in a tournament, so the pressure's on.
We both get pretty good starts, with me going first on the T1 Charge. He forgets you can't Rare Candy on your first turn while going second, and plays his hand as if he could then Rare Candy and Magnezone for Magnetic Draw. He Junk Arms his only energy, and that ends up costing him the T1 Charge. He also Sage's away a Magnemite T1, which couldn't make me happier. That can easily cost you the game in mirror. On my turn, I N him after candying into my own Magnezone, since I know he has the Candy+Magnezone of his own. I'm also able to Catcher + Disaster Volt his lone Magnemite, since he whiffed on the T1 Collector. He proceeds to bench another lone Magnemite, and I do the same to that one. He has trouble drawing energy without Magnetic Draw, and I'm also able to double Disaster Volt away his Thundurus before he gets any good Charges off of it. From there, it's smooth sailing. He Super Rods his Magnemites back into his deck, and eventually manages to bench double Magnemite. This turns into one Magnezone, but it's too little too late as I'm down to two prizes. I get two Lost Burns off for game.
3-3
I'd normally be pretty disappointed about a 3-3, but since I scooped one game mostly to be nice, and I got donked one game, it's really not that bad. Always next time. Thanks for reading!
