Charizard EX in Expanded

Hi, I'm wondering if there's any way to bring the Charizard EX deck into Expanded format? The only pairing I see at first glance is Emboar from Black/White.

RE: Charizard EX for Expanded?

The Expanded Format is no place for Stage 2 Evolutions. While Emboar can help, it is otherwise too slow. Use Blacksmith from Flashfire to power up Charizard-EX!

As for the deck itself, I find that Charizard-EX pairs with Pyroar from FlashFire and PhantomForces pretty well. The one from Flashfire, while not too strong, can stop a lot of decks quickly, like Plasma Variants, Virizion/Genesect (if you can get rid of their G Boosters), and Aromatisse Toolboxes. The one from Phantom Forces has access to a nice Ability that can help Knock Out a Pokemon on the Bench that your opponent hasn't finished preparing. Unfortunately, the one from Phantom Forces has a pretty bad attack.

RE: Charizard EX for Expanded?

Charizard-Pyroar is one of my expanded format decks and it performs quite well.

Neat. I didn't expect something in a rotating format would perform as well in an "eternal" format, based on my experience playing Magic. What sort of supporting pokemon would you recommend along with Pyroar? Entei EX (Dark Explorers) comes to mind, for its Grand Flame as backup attack and Charizard recharge...granted the recharge part seems redundant with Blacksmith.

First of all, I only run Wing Attack/Combustion Blast Charizard EX which I feel provides the best overall options. Secondly, I also run Reshiram (Outrage) which is still a formidable starting Poke, as well as a great attacker. I had the room; so, I also incorporated a Zekrom (Outrage) as a counter to Yveltal EX.

Lastly, whenever you think of running DCEs in a deck and/or you want just a different type, C energy required, great attacking Poke, then Mewtwo EX is probably #1 on that list for me. Hence, I also have 1 in my deck too.

Btw, I also saw a cool variation where a player ran 2 Keldeo EXs in his deck in order to continuously attack with 'Zard EX's Combustion Blast with Pyroar acting more as a secondary attacker and/or "wall."

RE: Charizard EX for Expanded?

Yes, I had seen Reshi in some builds and did wonder why no one was adding Zekrom to deal with the Yveltal weakness. In a build that adds, maybe 1 Reshiram and 1 Zekrom, would I mainly rely on Blacksmith to charge up Charizard, while sticking my DCE's on Zekrom and Reshiram? I have a rudimentary list of pokemon:

4 Charizard EX (Combustion Blast)
1 Reshiram
1 Zekrom
1 Keldeo EX
1 Mewtwo EX

Would this deck still require Pyroar, or should I fill out the rest with some search Items/Supporters? Back when WOTC was running the game, it wasn't uncommon to see lists with no more than 12-14 Pokémon, the rest being Trainers and Energy.

If you review the decks in the Deck Strategy Forum, you'll still find that many decks still run about 12 - 14 Poke, some fewer, and some a little more. Needless to say, the average number of Poke centers around that particular deck's strategy. For instance, should you want a Charizard-based deck intending to deal 150-170 damage continuously, then you may not want any Pyroar since you'll need space for the various cards that support that particular strategy. "My" starting deck skeleton would consist of:

  • 4 Charizard EX (Combustion Blast)
    2 Keldeo EX
    2 Mewtwo EX
    3 Reshiram (Outrage)
    1 Zekrom (Outrage)

    2 Battle Compressor
    2 Blacksmith
    3 Float Stone
I would then build-out the deck from there and refine. Play-test a lot and make further refinements.

On the other hand, should I want a more Pyroar-centric focus, then I'd start with a minimum 3-3 Pyroar line and compliment those Poke with:

  • 2 Charizard EX (Combustion Blast)
    2 Mewtwo EX
    2 Reshiram (Outrage)
    1 Zekrom (Outrage)

    2 Battle Compressor
    2 Blacksmith
I would then build-out the deck from there and refine. Play-test a lot and make further refinements.
