When you use his attack, slap of misfortune, does this work with the sleep special condition? In other words, could you use this attack so that when they flip to see if they wake up, it is automatically tails and they stay asleep? Does that flipping count as their turn yet or is it just in between turns? thanks.

I would say Slap of Misfortune does not apply to sleep since it's in between turns.

Brave Vesperia is definitely correct. Slap of Misfortune reads "Whenever your opponent flips a coin during his or her next turn, treat it as tails." Flipping a coin to see if a pokemon wakes up from sleep happens in between turns, which isn't considered to be during either player's turn.
