It's finally happened... The internal battery for my Crystal cartridge has died. So my question is, does anyone know if my save file is permanently lost? I'm perfectly willing to change out its battery, and I assume that this will kill previous data but I wasn't completely sure. I've had this save file since it came out and it would sadden me to lose a complete game. Anyone done this before? What happened?

Unfortunately all data in your game is lost. The save file in gb/gbc games were saved in the battery. So while you can change the old battery with a new one, you'll never get your save file back. But the good news is that if you switch out the battery, it'll last about as long as your currently dead one did.
Sorry to hear the bad news, but it's unfortunately bound to happen to every Pokémon game from Gen1 and Gen2.
