Ruling Damage and Kukui

I have not played Pokemon TCG in a very long time... and I am currently building a Xerneas Gardevoir GX deck...

My buddy pointed out a rather interesting detail about Professor Kukui, however I do not believe it works like he says it does.

x = energies between both active pokemon

His argument: the 20 stacks onto the printed damage of the card BEFORE calculation.
Infinite force + Kukui: (30+20)x

My argument: the 20 stacks AFTER the original damage would be calculated
Infinite Force + Kukui: (30x)+20

So my obvious question would be...

Who is correct in this argument?

Kind of important, actually, since the one who is proven wrong owes the other dinner lmao

Your attacks do 20 more damage. It's not a hard concept to grasp.

I figured as much, but he is being adamant about a clarified answer.

So MY argument is the correct one or was his argument correct?

It doesn't matter how the damage for an attack is calculated, it's still only one attack, so you're correct.

Professor Kukui adds 20 damage after all calculations have been done. Your friend's argument is a little absurd, considering how much damage attacks like Infinite Force and Dark Pulse would be able to rack up given that was the case.

To be fair, this kind of damage bonus does happen in other games, specifically those using non-TCG medium.

In this case, the issue is needing to read the games official rulebook (available as a .pdf here): pages 13-14 and 20 should explain this in detail. The official website's Play! Pokémon Rules & Resource page is quite helpful. :)

Kukui adds the 20 damage before applying weakness and resistance. It even says so on the card.

I emphasized "after" because Ourian used that exact phrase when describing his argument. But you're right, it is applied before Weakness and Resistance as it says on the card.

Sorry about the confusion. I was, indeed, referring to the overall damage on the card and not applying Weakness and Resistance.

Thank you all for the info
