Unlike several other Premier Events, I actually had the night before off from work so I had a good nights sleep. I had decided to play Charizard to prove it has potential. The deck had been working very well for me ever since I built it. I head over to the PTO's house in the morning, help them get everything in the vehicle then we head out. There was a traffic back-up on 252 so we were a little late, but not super late.
Round 1 vs Ryan V with Kingdra
As soon as this match started I knew I was in trouble. I had a decent start, however, Charizard just doesn't beat Kingdra unless Charizard donks it basically. I got out a couple Charizard and think I took 1 prize before I lose. I knew from that point it was going to be difficult to impossible to top cut.
Record: 0-1
Round 2 vs Unknown Name with a grass and dark deck
I could tell based on the cards this was going to be an easy match-up. He never really gets anything set up while I quickly get out Charizard. He gets heads two times with a Scyther After Image strike or whatever the attack is called. He did get a prize due to me not drawing an energy to retreat and bring up another Charizard.
Record: 1-1
Round 3 vs Nathan with Legend Deck
He literally had like an all legends deck. He started with a Sableye then plays Ho-Oh Legend turn 1. I get set up pretty quickly as does he. We basically start exchanging prizes until at one point I am down to 1 or 2 prizes. We were both nervous as the game was very close. For my final move, I retreated Typhlosion Prime for a Charizard and did two Afterburner so I had 3 energy on it. I then drop Expert Belt and do Charizard's second attack for 140 damage giving me the game. How their deck even works with 5 or so Legends is beyond me. While he may run Jirachi and a bunch of POV and Cheerleader's Cheer, he never got out Jirachi against me. Typhlosion really helped tremendously since he was having some energy trouble.
Record: 2-1
Round 4 vs Someone with VileGar
This was my first time ever facing the deck. I quickly play my Luxury Ball and Expert Belt before my opponent can get Vileplume in play. I started with 2 Cyndaquil and a Bronzor. Within a few turns I have Typhlosion Prime, Bronzong and Ninetails out. I had to deal with getting Looker's twice, luckily I got back the cards I needed. Bronzong helped me get rid of my trainers so when my opponent got Gengar out, I only had 1 trainer in my hand. Typhlosion Prime was doing amazing for me since they were having energy problems. It got 3 prizes iirc. My opponent forgot to flip for Fainting Spell. Since it does say may, I didn't say anything til after the match. The trainer lock didn't really hurt me the whole game. I won the round.
Record: 3-1
Round 5 vs Steelix/Exploud
At first I think this will be an easy match being that I have the type advantage. Either second or third turn my opponent gets out Exploud so the weakness factor no longer gives me an edge. This was by far my hardest match of the day. Each play both of us made was carefully thought out. My opponent flipping heads on both Life Herb was annoying and costed me getting a KO. I didn't bother belting anything until I had to. I figure making my opponent get it by knocking out 6 of my Pokemon was probably the best way to approach the match. I did end up belting 2 Charizard, but I only let one of them faint, mainly because I had no other play and one of them it was an even exchange since their Steelix was belted. Typhlosion was definitely useful for me so I could prevent my opponent from using the attack that does 100 damage. Time was called on my turn so I finish my turn and my opponent goes. They play Warp Point so I brought up Typhlosion since I would be able to retreat it after doing Afterburner. My opponent does Energy Stream. I retreat the Typhlosion and bring up Charizard to finish off the Steelix.
Record: 4-1
I knew it would be tough because there was 2 4-0s and 7 3-1s before the final round meaning not everyone would get in that was 4-1. I unfortunately ended up getting fifth based on resistance. My opponent's opponent win percentage was the second highest, too bad my regular opponent's win percentage wasn't.
Overall I had a really good day and had a lot of fun. I was very surprised not to face any SP decks. If anyone wants to know why I don't like Radu or Thomas, PM me.
Props:
Drawing cards I put back with Looker's.
Not getting donked
4-1
Proving Charizard is viable
Meeting up with friends
Had good time
Slops:
Radu taking first (I don't like him)
Thomas V. taking second (I don't like him either)
Traffic both on the way there and back
Facing Kingdra in round 1; most likely costed me making top cut
5th place
