Ruling Discarding MultiEnergy questions

1. Ok, so when a card says "Discard a _____ energy," can you discard a Multi/Rainbow/Scramble/etc energy as the ______ energy? Or must you discard a basic ______.
2. Clarification: When retreating with a, say, scramble energy, you may discard more energy than the retreat cost, right?
Ex:
Retreat Cost: CC
Energy Attachted: 1 Scramble (counts as 3 energy) and 1 Fire energy
Plan of action: Discard the scramble energy, but you cannot discard the fire and the scramble, right?

if it says to discard say all fire energy then you have to discard it if it is a fire energy and a DRE or a multi is attached then you have discard it

If something intends for you only to discard Basic Energy, it will always specifically state Basic Energy. In the absence of that wording, anything providing the requested Energy type will satisfy the requirement. Compare Blaziken GE's Flame Kick:

This is straight out of the rulebook. The proper way to handle retreating is you discard Energy cards one at a time until the retreat cost is fully paid. You are allowed to overpay when cards providing multiple Energy units are involved.

In the situation you describe, you have two options:

1. Discard the Fire energy first (paid 1, need 1 more), and then the Scramble (paid 4, cost met).
2. Discard the Scramble (paid 3, cost met).

In either case, once the retreat cost is met (or exceeded), you stop discarding. You can't continue to discard Energy for no reason.

No, Special Energy Cards like Multi, DRE & etc does not provide energies when they are in the deck or discard pile. They are considered as an Energy Card in the deck and discard pile. So, you can only take Basic Fire Energy card with Fire Dance...

Correct. Read the cards carefully, TCC:

While in play, Double Rainbow Energy provides every type of Energy

While in play, Multi Energy provides every type of Energy

While in play, Rainbow Energy counts as every type of basic Energy

While in play, if you have more Prize cards left than your opponent, Scramble Energy provides every type of Energy

The deck and discard are not "in play". While in the deck/discard, they don't provide any type of Energy at all, and thus can't be searched for by something looking for a specific Energy type.
