PTCGO Does this interaction work

Does the Volcanion EX ability work if I am already discarding cars for another reason? for example I have an infernape and it says discard all fire energies on this card for this attacked us 40 damage for each fire energy discarded so can I effectively turn that 40 damage per fire energy into 70

No, you have to discard an energy with the intent of using the ability.
Also, the damage increase would only be calculated after the discard and not applied to each discarded card. So it's (40*n)+30 and not (40+30)*n

Thx it’s OK the infernape that I was using doesn’t even even work anyways cause it’s not basic
