Ok so the story is, Today I was talking with my "friends" and then someone brought up that he was getting an X box 360 for his 8th grade graduation. Well I said I am getting a DSi. They all gave me a puzzled look and then started cracking up. I was like what the heck is so funny. Well my "friend" said "Dude why would you want that?" I said its cool and I want it because of the internet browser and to play people online.
He says "Why would you want to play a bunch of two year olds online?" I said what are you talking about. Well apparently all my "friends" think they are for little kids, including one of my good friends who said he wanted one. -_-; well I said why? He didnt even have a reason. Well they thought that was so funny that they told EVERYONE. Well I have been getting made fun of the whole day and it made me wonder what others think about this. I personaly dont think they are for little kids, since they have the internet on them. I think that takes a little responsibility, but everyone at my school, except for my friend Sarah, thinks they are for little kids. Does anyone have this stereotype at their school or do you agree? I just want to know what other people think.

Also if Im in the wrong forums sorry, could you please move it?

Wow, that's kind of pathetic to be honest. Not you, but your friend. First off, if a parent is dumb enough to get a 2 year old child a DS, they have a problem. Secondly, I'm 23 and own a DS. I want to get a DSi, but funds are a little low at the moment.

Sounds like your friend is going to be the kind of person that gets a brand new car for his 16th birthday from mommy and daddy, and then when your parents get you a used one, he's going to ask you why you'd want a used car.

Because Xbox 360's and PSP's are the "cool, older kid" systems, I could see them trying to hide their wants for one. They are making fun of you just to get a rise out of you. If you ignore it, they'll probably end up leaving you alone.

Yeah well they finnaly did come up with a reason. They said it didnt have good games and all the games they have are rated E. Isnt that a good thing? I know they arent all E though. And for some reason I think COD has possesed their minds and gave them a blood lust. They said that they were all baby games because there was no blood. o_O I think thats creepy.

Really now? Nintendo has released a myriad of great games for the DS. Mario Kart, The World Ends with You, Luminous Arc, the whole Pokemon Franchise, Phoenix Wright, and many others.

Maybe you should tell them about the trauma center series. You're performing surgery with the touch screen. And go figure, the game is rated T.

Really? I thought it was ratet M o.o
But DSi Isn't just for kids. (Althought I'm saying this when I'm 10 and I own one XD)
I've Played Trama Cenetr Before, lots of blood XD

Honestly, I've seen way more kids obsessing over PS3/360 than I have over Nintendo consoles in shops, on the bus, etc.

Kids tend to think that games with a lot of violent action, blood and guns makes games more mature, just because only adults can play them...
I personally tend to dislike these games because they're not real games, they're copycats of other games (or, as it is the case nowadays, the 4th sequel of some other game), with slightly altered storylines (which just means game-lengthening cut-scenes most of the time), some new uninspired weapons, and with "awesome graphics" as usually one of their few, or even only, selling point (When asking one of the designers of Halo 3 to describe Halo 3 in one word, he said "HD" :S). It's very hard to find a decent-quality shooter out there nowadays (possibly because I'm not the biggest fan of the genre, but whatever), and the only praise any shooter seems to be getting is "awesome graphics" and "very realistic", which are stuff you'd rate movies on, not games ._. (Where's "fun", "gameplay", "challenging", ...?)

So tell them to grow up and grow out of this child-like thought-train, because they probably don't know anything about actual games. R-rated doesn't make a good game, I usually find the opposite to be true, in fact. It's like companies are using the R as a selling point, which makes no sense whatsoever, but the kids seem to think it does...

Also, didn't GTA, godfather of all games criticized by the media, come out on the DS recently? Or does that not count?

Shh, that doesn't count! XD

I voted it's for kids and it wasn't a mistake, but I meant older kids(17 is technically still a kid!) AND adults!

Welcome to the real world.

I own both a PSP and DS, and I can't say which one is better. The PSP has superior graphics, great exclusives and doubles up as a better multimedia system. I don't know anything about the DSi, but perhaps the lack of popularity of the PSP in the West has caused less developers to produce games on the Sony handheld. With an inferior engine, it would be easier to develop games on the DS. I also own a PS2 and a Xbox 360, and I've been playing PC games for a long time. Though I may not have owned many consoles, I know a little bit about preferences.

The Nintendo consoles and handhelds target the widest demographic. If your grandma plays games, do you think she'd play Cooking Mama or Call of Duty? Unless she was a soldier during WW2, of course. However, the most popular games on the Nintendo consoles are games targetted at a younger audience. Even games targetted at an older audience have "kiddy graphics", perhaps due to the fact that the consoles are not as strong as the Sony and Microsoft ones.

In the end, it really boils down to what games you prefer. Don't feel bad about your friends making fun of you. It's what you like, and if they continue to make fun of you (with the intention of making you feel bad), are they really your friends? The last thing you should do is go all out to defend the DS; that's fanboy-ism. If you want to reason this out with your friends, go take a look at review sites, or statistics in sales, the range of games different consoles offer, etc. Rather, you should be defending your right to like anything, in this case, the DS.

Well for some reason kids these day, in the modern world think that Nintendo and DS is babyish. They all seem to think that PS3 owns, hum. Same with 360, hum. It doesn't matter want you're freinds think and their opinion it just matters what kind of games you like and what style, don't listen to anyoone. Be your self^_^

I think the dsi is targeted at all audiences. I think because the games graphics are not as superior as a PSP or Xbox and are more simple, they tend to associate graphics and age preference together. Several games target different audiences and I admit some ds games are going to be targeted for kids but other won't be and can have a very general demographic. I, like Noobnerd, have a psp and ds and honestly, I can't decide which is better.

People about 3 years ago adapted to the idea that I video game was buttons and switches used to move or make something happen. With Nintendo's unconventional new gaming consoles (i.e wii, ds) that require a new aspect (moving the wii or rubbing the stylus on a touch screen) people may not like the idea and immediately say that they don't like it simply because they haven't changed with the technology.

I think that I have to agree with your friends. Yes it's for kids but it's also for teenagers, adults and so on. There are games which teach you languages, there are gory games and some games that shouldn't be mentioned on why they are inappropriate on the ds. Honestly, do you think nintendo wanted little kids to be learning a totally new language as a teacher or to older people who use it more like a tool?

I just think that some games are targeted at kids, but your friends can't really judge you on playing a little kids game when your buying the console because it would make more sense to judge on the games. If you got GTA chinatown wars I don't think your friends would think your playing a little kids game. So the dsi is aimed at everyone through a variety of games and someone can't judge whether a gaming console is childish because without the games, it's not childish nor mature

So: Get GTA, rub it in their faces, whether you like it or not, just to get them off your back, and get on with life.

Or just don't care and save a few bucks.

ntndo scks cz th grphics skz nd al teh gamz r E.

If all they care about is realism and graphics, then they're in no position to be arguing anyway.

And it's for everybody. :F

What about the song playing ability?

Are the songs censored when they're played?

Also it's about the fun you have and so far there's only one game that I would enjoy on the X-box.

I can see what they mean by the DS being childish as nearly everyone that owns them is someone of a young age. The games on the DS are very simple and user friendly as this encorages children to want to play it.

Now with PS3 and Xbox 360 games are more serious, powerful, innovating and thrilling. They are obviously aimed at teenagers and older as games contain violence, a story that would require some thought to follow and scary/unnaporpriate images to attrat the audience's attantion.

So conclusion:

DS: Simple, colourful= Babyish

PS3, PSP,XBOX 360: Serious, gripping story, beautiful graphics= Serious gamer, teenager

This is not my opinion but some what of a fact that I have observed :)

I own a DS and am proud but I also have a PS3 as I am not fully content with what a ds can do but what it can do it does amazingly.

Well, personally I think that the DS is for kids. Now, don't think me wrong, what I am saying is that by having 14 years, you might stop playing DS and start getting serious and buying a console like PS3 or XBox 360, or mature games for Wii. I think it is cool, but personally I preffer the blood and fight.

There is no censor because the system does not have a text-to-word filter/generator.
The music files are placed directly on the System.

I have a DSi, and I play it more than PS3 and Wii combined. It's a great system i.m.o.
Anyways, if they say the DSi is childish, challenge them saying, "Fat Princess for the PS3 doesn't sound all that mature, either."

I actually have a comeback about things being meant for children that usually shuts people like that up, but I'm thinking it's probably not a good idea to post :p

Hint: Women have em.

Seriously though, aren't all games technically for kids? It's kind of hypocritical to make fun of someone for playing "childish games" when I'm sure your friends are just those idiots on Halo screaming over the microphone "MOM, WHERE'S MY CHOCOLATE MILK? MOM!!! CHOCOLATE MILK!"
