Dumping Cable TV

Charter just raised me yet again so I went to their office, dumped my equipment, and cancelled my account (I could have just switched the account to someone else's name and got a new customer rate, but screw them and their monopoly). I've never been without cable TV before - never have used DVR, Tivo, Netflix, HBO, On Demand, Pay Per View, or any of that stuff - just live cable TV. I guess I'll get Netflix now, maybe Chromecast, and I'll still get over-the-air HD channels (such as the news), but I'll lose my beloved Cartoon Network / Adult Swim and occasional Disney Channel / sciencey channels (though those have been overrun by stupid reality shows in recent years).

Has anyone here actually dumped cable altogether and what do you think? What other services do you use? How did you feel about dumping cable if you did and was it hard to adjust? I'm a little afraid, haha - I always have the TV on and love to channel surf, but I won't have that anymore.

I'm currently with any kind of cable/satellite TV service and have been for some time. It's so easy to follow along with your favourite shows and such via services like Netflix, Hulu, etc, and these services also cater much more to the current generation of mobility than traditional cable companies. I personally use the internet for the vast majority of my TV watching (not that I watch much, but still), though we still get some basic channels for things like news, though we don't use those much either. The few shows that I like to follow are easily done online, and the same is true for almost all (if not all) of the most popular TV series.

WPM, there is a website called USTVnow.com, where you can watch a few cable channels and Cartoon Network is one of them, but the picture quality is quite low (About 240p/360p) and you may have problems watching stuff on there, as you come from America.

You can get 28 channels for $19.00 a month for 3 months and with DVR it's $29.00.
BTW, it's based in Pennsylvania, so it's all East Coast, but you can record shows and they stay for about two weeks.
The problem I have with Netflix, is it doesn't have a lot of the shows I like to watch, or doesn't have the DVD extras of shows I do like watching.

As a 90s kid, I like to watch stuff live, as there's something about seeing stuff on TV, than on Netflix or something.

I have netflix and hulu. There is usually something I can find to watch. Although I find myself watching less tv these days than I used to watch.

??

I haven't watched TV in maybe 3 years. Do young people really still watch TV? We just talked today about watching TV and none of the four people discussing watch TV anymore.

I usually don't watch TV, but that's mainly just us having one useable TV at home. Like many other people I just use the Internet really. Netflix or Hulu is a great way to be able to watch TV while paying a pretty cheap price. For some shows that aren't found on those two I just use my iPad and watch the shows from the channel's app as most have an app you can watch their shows on. But there are so many other ways you can watch TV without the need of cable or satellite.

When your cable company keeps you on hold, you get angry! When you get angry, you go blow off steam. When you go blow off steam accidents happen. When accidents happen, you get an eye patch. When you get an eye patch, people think you're tough. When people think you're tough, people wanna see how tough. And when people wanna see how tough, you wake up in a roadside ditch. Don’t wake up in a roadside ditch! Get rid of Cable and upgrade to DirectTV.

I feel so cool because me and WPM both use(d) Charter. =D

So yeah, Charter is pretty much making us buy cable boxes for each TV that uses Charter's services. I for one find that to be pretty lame. However, I don't think I'm gonna be ditching cable. Besides, I like channel surfing as opposed to Netflix, although I have that too. Netflix to me is more like a cushion when you and your friends or family are bored on a weekend and there is nothing good to do or watch on TV (which actually happened to me last night).

Cable is outdated and expensive and Charter is terrible. Good job. I wish I could do the same, but I don't think my parents would really like it.

I've heard Netflix and Hulu are great options. Netflix gives you most of the movies out there, while Hulu delivers popular TV shows. You can also still access news stations and anything else you would miss. I read a lot about it here.

Actually, Netflix has next to nothing in terms of movies. I went movie surfing on my brother's account and couldn't find most of the stuff I was looking for. But, kudos to them for having some Korean dramas on there. I have Comcast, and we also must have these little boxes for each of the TVs in our house. It's annoying to have to move them around like they're antennas in order to watch certain channels. But, other than that, I'm okay with cable. I do use it a lot. There's something I like about watching from a tv screen rather than a computer/iPad. I can also fall asleep with the tv on. And, for our family, Comcast isn't really that expensive.

I have an antenna to pick up the local network channels and a streaming Netflix account for TV shows that I can't get on network, or for network shows that I want to binge watch. If you're just going to get a streaming Netflix account, it's true their movie selection is pretty lackluster (unless you like horrible B and C movies), but their TV selection is pretty extensive. They have Cartoon Network and Adult Swim titles, as well as Discovery/"sciencey" titles, and even some Mystery Science Theater 3000 selections, if you're into that.

Last night's Bleach episode is online already at different sites.

Why would you ever want to watch Bleach anyway?

Well, before I was a mod (then demoded) I always ended up speaking to WPM when he was watching Bleach.

This is a cable TV thread. You're free to discuss which shows are on and which aren't, but please do NOT discuss the shows. Make a separate thread if you want to do this.
Just a friendly reminder:).

I'm just mentioning shows WPM will miss without Cable.

Whatever you do, MAKE SURE YOU DON'T HAVE A DATA CAP. Check if you're unsure, and double-check if you are. Netflix/Hulu/Streaming sites period eats through data like nobody's business; depending on if you have a cap and what it may be, you could quite possibly be better off with cable.
