Hey there everybody! Some of the most popular decks in the format right now are Darkrai varients. Darkrai has a very hard time beating any Terrakion varient and Tornadus EX can still easily be KO'd by a Groudon and a pluspower, which almost all Terrakion varients run. Is there any other card in our format that can be teched into Darkrai to give it a better matchup against Darkrai? Lets talk about some potential cards.

I'd say regular tornadus, mainly for prize exchange (EX rule) and energy circulation to keep everything 0 retreat

how? giant claw is limited to 100 damage (before pluspower) on a pokemon with 150HP, and 60 on 170 HP

It may KO, but not easily. It's 2-shots, both ways (2x power blast vs 2x boosted giant claws).

I've been doing even more testing and I've found that, as 27th_wonder said, regular Tornadus can keep up the prize exchange and circulate your energy well.

Darkrai can also function without a counter.

Here's how:

1. Get a Dark Claw or Special Dark onto a Darkrai with enough energy to use Night Spear.
2. Use Night Spear, hit for 30 on the bench.
3. Catcher up the damaged Terrakion, use Night Spear again to get a double KO and stop them from doing anything.

Weavile. Works great to prevent Fightings from hitting the field, and it is also great in every matchup.

Weavile would work, but doesn't it take a little while to set up and takes up a lot of space? What would a Darkrai player take out for Weavile?

It does take up space, but it really is the only single counter for Terrakion. There is no such thing as a hard counter to a card that only needs to be on the field for one turn to do what it is supposed to do.

Crushing Hammer + Lost Remover + Junk Arm + Sableye. Pretty simple yet incredibly reliable and obvious counter. It just struggles against Terrakion techs.

Aw man, this is about Terrakion the deck? I thought this was about Terrakion techs. Wow.

Just deal 100 (Sp. Dark) to the active Terrakion, which should have the energy on it. The next turn, Catcher up the Terrakion you sniped last turn and knock both it and the benched one (the one with energy) out. Now they will have no energy in play as EXP Share does not activate. Terrakion is SUPER easy to beat using this strategy.

Thanks everybody for all of your replies and ideas. I'm sure that all Darkrai players will find this thread extremely helpful. Let's keep the discussion going!

I also found that Shaymin EX can really hurt Terrakion. After they take two prizes, Shaymin EX can one shot Terrakions with one prism and Terrakion has to three hit KO an eviolited Shaymin EX.

Shaymin EX takes two turns to set up, unless you Shaymin Energy, which is a bit of a waste. It also hampers consistency if you are already using something other than Basic Dark, like DCE.

The easiest option is just Darkrai. Take a double knockout.

If people play Terrakion decks like my old Tetrakion deck that I ran, they should have at least two benched Exp. Share. so if that situation shows up, Eviolite your Darkrai EX, you can KO five Terrakion before they KO Darkrai. You don't need a counter, just Darkrai EX with Eviolite and a Sp. Dark and knowledge of how to play smart.:p

Because the Terrakion with energy is on the bench when it is knocked out, EXP Share will not activate, and thus they have no energy to attack with.

Well, yeah, that's kinda the point.>.> Granite, the last benched one will get an energy from Exp. Share no matter what because they will attach to the one they think will be the active KO, which is why you need to Eviolite and pray they don't Top Deck a plus power.:p If you get a turn one Darkrai, you should be able to win by turn 6-9.

If they attach to what they think I will KO, they will have just given me a free turn, so now I can just Catcher your 3rd Terrakion up, do 100 to it and 30 to a random one. If they attach to that one, they will have given me 2.5 prizes while they have used up tons of their resources to get 2. Then I can just use this strategy again later in the game to secure the win.

Using you're strategy, it's best to let them get all four Terrakion benched. By T3 three Terrakion would have 100 Damage and one with 90, from there, KO two Terrakion, you'll lose your Darkrai at this point, send up your other one, take out the last two with damage, and now they don't have any Exp. Share unless they Junk Armed for it.

In all honesty, Darkrai/Tornadus doesn't have that much problems with Tertrakion, if you rotate their bulls around that is.
