Yes, you can. The pokemon's type & edition will not affect the evolution line...

You can, however if by 'classic set' you mean the base set, you would not be able to use it in tournament play, as use of the older cards are not allowed these days.

Oh, so by "older cards", u mean the cards made by Wizards Of The Coast aren't allowed to be used in tournaments?

There are some tournaments called 'Unlimited Format' in which any card can be used (there might be a couple of illegal ones but pretty much all of them. This is very rarely played though.

I thought old cards from Wizards of the Coast were not allowed in any type of deck unless it has been reprinted. Your allowed to use new set cards with older set cards? I did not think this was permitted at all or at any tournament. I am not a player but I do follow the rules closely. The tournaments are too far away for me and they are usually in Seattle and that is about 100 miles from where I am located.:)

For a Modified format tournament, you are correct. All Premier events (that count for ratings toward Worlds) are Modified.

Unlimited format is exactly what it says -- no limits on what cards can be played. An Unlimited tournament is more of a "for fun" event run by a local Tournament Organizer -- it is a sanctionable format, though.

Look at Section 3 of the Official Formats document.
