So this was my first real Pokemon event even since when I collected the cards and played casually with friends 10 years ago, and I must say it was really fun and well worth the price.
I can't remember exactly what I pulled, but I did get a Rayquaza EX that I based my deck around. Here's an outline of my deck:
Pokemon
1 Rayquaza EX
2 Durant
1 Electrike
2 Gible
2 Gabite (1 with Ability to search for any dragon Pokemon in deck and put in hand)
1 Vulpix
1 Wurmple
1 Cascoon
1 Stunfisk
1 Emolga
1 Rufflet
1 Braviary
1 Sigilyph (in case I came across an EX with its Ability that prevents damage and conditions from EX attacks while I built up my own)
1 Blend Energy W/L/F/S
1 Blend Energy G/F/P/D
Trainers
1 Giant Cape pokemon tool
1 Rescue Scarf pokemon tool
Energy
8 Fire
8 Lightning
4 Steel
I'll do my best to remember how these went:
First
Started with Electrike active with a Vulpix, Sigilyph, and a Gible. I start attaching energy to Electrike and attack with his Tackle for 10 for a couple turns. I draw a Rayquaza on the same turn that I evolved Gible, start powering up Rayquaza, and eventually brought Rayquaza up to take out four of his actives in a row.
1-0
Second
I don't remember what I started with, but I only had one active and one benched. I draw a Gible on my second turn, evolve it to Gabite immediately, search out my Rayquaza and start firing it up. I attach an energy to my active to retreat it and brought Rayquaza up to finish off his pokemon, drawing either a fire or electric the next few turns to keep the attack going.
2-0
Third
This match kind of sucked. I started with an Electrike and one other Pokemon on my bench. My opponent starts with a stunfisk and gets it powered up, hitting my Electrike for weakness damage plus 20 on my only benched Pokemon. I couldn't draw anymore Pokemon, and so I was knocked out with no benched pokemon left to promote in 3 turns. Kind of a sucky way to finish the day.
2-1
Overall I really enjoyed it. There were some REALLY annoying younger kids, but I kind of kept to myself, making a little conversation with some of the parents (I'm 25) who I felt more comfortable around. I didn't expect to do well at all considering I'd never played competitively, and I look forward to the next dragon Pre-release I'm going to on Friday and a Post-Release on the 25th of August.
