I just recently started to play the ptcg and I wanted to know what was the current format. Are HGSS still in the format or is it just BW.


Ok thanks but say I have "Pokémon Communication" and "Switch" both from HGSS can I still use them because they have the same effect as those from BW even though "Pokémon communication" doesn't have the exact same description.

The current format for tournament play is black and white on. Of course you'll be able to use any reprints in our format that were printed in older sets

Funnily enough, I had this question already answered at the very top of the stickied FAQ thread.

What will next year’s modified format be?

Effective September 1st, 2012, the Modified-Legal format for tournaments will be Black & White and up (BW-on), plus any Black Star promos numbered BW01 and higher. Also, you may only use cards that are the local language of the country you live in.

Yes those are legal. You can use anything that's been reprinted. Only a select few cards can you not use without a reference card.
