Ruling fossil starters

ok, im pretty sure i can start out with fossils even though they are tainers because this is the "beggining setup", and not the "first turn".

all my friends are saying that im completely wrong, and have no idea of what im saying. i just want to clear things up. thanks.

EDIT: also i was wondering if i could search for fossils using supporters such as: pokemon collector, bebe's search, roseanne's research.

You can start with a Fossil if it's in your starting hand.

If it's the only Basic you have, you have to start with it.

Since Fossils aren't Pokemon until you put them into play, cards that search your deck or discard pile for Pokemon can't get Fossils. A card would have to tell you to search for "a Trainer card with Fossil in its name" to allow Fossils to be taken. Note you still can't take Old Amber with any of these cards, because Old Amber is not "a Trainer card with Fossil in its name."
