Ruling fossil

Yes, and they even MUST be played if the only basic pokemon you have in your hand is a fossil.
 
Yes, but they have to be played by the rules printed on the most resent version of the card.
 
Any class of card is only treated as another class when the card says so. Holon's castform is a basic pokémon until it says it is an energy; Magmar is basic until Magby evolves into it with its power (Magmar does not evolve from anything) and the fossils are a subset of trainer cards only becoming basic when the card instructs.
 
Mysterious Fossil is PLAYED as a POKEMON, but in your deck, it's a Trainer Card, so you may search for it with Errand-Running with Budew DP1 for example.
 
^In your deck it is a fossil trainer card. The trainer card subsets: tools, technical machine, Rocket's robot and fossils all come under the criteria of "trainer". However, unlike other "trainer cards" that you called it, it can be searched by Fossil Excavator.
 
I am just wondering why is he played as a Pokemon if he has no attacks but you can evolve it after getting started? Also how can he have 40 HP and take damage? I have been wondering about this card for a very long time now.:)

It has no attacks of it's own. But if you put for example TM01 to it, it could use it and Paralyze your opponents pokemon (if it has the energy the attack needs).

In play (and in your startup hand) it is considered to be a normal type basic pokemon. So you have to play it if it's the only pokemon in your hand during the initial set up. In your deck and discard pile it is considered to be a trainer card. While in your hand, it is still a trainer card, but you get to play it as if it was a basic pokemon.

Of course fossils take damage. The HP is there to tell you when it is knocked out (just like any pokemon). And in the new DP rules, if a fossil is knocked out, you get to draw a price card (by who ever knocked it out).

Read the cards. They'll tell you what they do.

They're rocks, so how can they attack? (without help ;)) And even rocks can be destroyed.
