Does spiritome AoA block fossils from being played?
Sure they are trainers but they say on the card o play as if it where a basic pokemon so shouldn't it play by basic rules not trainer rules. Also if it does count as playing down a trainer should it really take damage from things like land shake (tortera SF) or miasma valley.
I dont think spiritome should be aloud to blck it but Ive been woundering for a long time and I'd like to hear other peoples responses so.....
Um....Talk.....

Yup, Spiritomb totally blocks Fossils. The idea that it's a Basic Pokemon only applies when it is on the field (except during setup, you're allowed to play a fossil as if it were a basic Pokemon if it's the only "Pokemon" in your hand). So, since Spiritomb blocks all Trainers, and Fossils are Trainers in the hand, then Spiritomb blocks Fossils.

On a side note, since they are trainers, this also means you can't use things like TSD, Pokemon Rescue, Night Maintenance, etc. to recover Fossils from the discard, since they are trainers.

But remember, it can not stop you from having a fossil as your pokemon at the begginging of the game. If you correctly follow the fossil ruling, they can't make you pick up the fossil and lose automatically.

And right after that sentence, note that it does say "Armor Fossil also counts as a Trainer card". Fossils count as trainers both in and out of play regardless.
Playing fossils is permitted during setup, but as long as that Spiritomb is active you can't play them from your hand during your turn - simple as that.
(Seriously, if you want to get your question answered, don't protest to the answers we give you.)

The idea that you can only set up a single fossil - and no other fossils or pokemon - during setup is false and needs to stop being quoted on these forums. Per the compendium:

Q. If you have a basic and one or more fossil cards, can you treat any or all fossils in your opening hand as Basic Pokémon?
A. Yes, you can start the game with a Fossil Trainer card as your Active Pokémon, and put a normal Basic Pokémon on your Bench (or vice-versa). (Oct 16, 2003 PUI Rules Team)

You are NOT limited to playing a single fossil during setup. You can play multiple fossils or a combination of fossils and normal basics.

The reason it says to play fossils like Basic Pokemon is because you cannot normally put a Trainer card into play. It is simply clarifying how you would bring said Fossil into play. It is a Trainer card at all times; when you put it into play, it becomes a Pokemon AND a Trainer card. Once it leaves play, it loses its Pokemon status and becomes just a Trainer card again.
