PROLOUGE - Clawed
The last Sumatran Tiger flailed around and roared, thrashing out its humongous claws wildly. A man in a black suit loaded the gun for a second time. The tiger slashed out a claw and roared as loudly as it could. The tiger pounced out at the man and clawed him to the wall. His black hat fell over his face and he smirked. He was in a black suit and tie and which were covered in blood, though he showed no signs of pain. The Tiger paced back slowly, into the darkness of the enclosure, terrified. The man knew he was winning. So did the Tiger. With one last effort, the tiger leapt onto the man and swiped his face with a shaking claw. The man gave way, falling on his machine gun. The tiger roared. The man found one final burst of strength to pull the trigger. The tiger lashed out its monstrous claws as it leapt forward; mouth stretched open revealing razor sharp teeth, each one the size of an elephant tusk. It was then that he shot.
The gun fired.
The tiger roared.
Then silence.

Pixie Island, off the coast of the Philippine Islands
Jack was a relatively normal 12-year old. For the meantime. He was about 5 ft, had short, scruffy brown hair and deep serious brown eyes. Jack lived in an area that was isolated from the rest of the world; in a small country village where nothing ever seemed to go wrong, Pixie Island. It got that name after Christopher Columbus claimed he saw pixies there when he first discovered it. There was only a tiny village with one school, 3 streets of houses, a high street, a cinema and a lake running across the left border. There was a hospital, police station and fire station and some offices along with a row of small shops. It wasn’t the most exciting of places but jack was happy. He wasn’t the sort of person who really cared about much. Only serious stuff. Consequently, he never mucked about and never really told jokes. But he never frowned; he always wore the same friendly smile. He just wanted to get on with life and therefore was glad he was he was in an isolated tiny village 150 miles from the Philippine Islands. It suited him. But Jack wasn’t really happy. He always had the same feeling, that someone was watching him.
His Mum had no job and his Dad was a doctor for the local hospital. It was useful for Jack, to have everything so local and especially to have a doctor who lived with him. This was one of those times when no doctor could help him though.
The rusty white Honda shuttle rolled down the old country lane, occasionally flipping over a speed bump. It was the 1997 model, old and slightly dilapidated. Jack wondered why his dad never bought a new one.
“How was school?” mum didn’t sound like she really was bothered but was being nice to Jack. Of course that wasn’t true; it was just the sarcastic tone that always unwontedly slipped into her voice.
“Okay,” Jack muttered, staring out the window in a half trance.
“Did you do anything interesting?”
“No,” came the small muffled reply.
“Hey, what’s up with you?” Mum turned round unaware of the pistol’s eye slipping out of the bushes, menacingly.
Jack acted instantly. First came the scream, “Mum!”, then he dived into action, leaping over the seat and grabbing the steering wheel. Dad had always made sure Jack new how to drive, as soon as his feet could reach the peddles. There were no laws in pixie island because there were never any crimes. There was even no government. (They had one threat to the world, a nuclear missile that they had once tried to blow up the Philippines with in their war of independence.) Jack reversed into a dustbin and zoomed forward, pushing Mum into the passenger seat. Suddenly, the gun fired a shot and Mum finally saw it. Was it too late? The bullet pinned the wheel and the car swivelled round. Immediately, Jack hit the U-turn and turned the car towards the gun. As the car zoomed through the bush, the engine roared like a tiger, knocking a figure, which dropped his pistol. The figure got up, jack squealed and the figure picked up his gun and aimed for Mum.
Mum got pinned in the shoulder and in the pain fell to the ground. The man with the gun dived behind a bush, and suddenly, reappeared on the other side, on a motorbike. Jack pushed the car into drive, and at 100miles per hour zoomed off into the distance, the Man on a Yamaha closing in on him, spraying bullets in the cars general direction. The figure on the bike whispered into a radio transmitter, and Minutes later, two more motorbikes followed.
Jack immediately pushed into reverse, and ducked under the front windscreen view, and into the small compartment of the car, pushing the pedals with his hands. The car hurtled backwards, Jack heard a man yell and swear violently and then a squashing sound. The car was pelted down with bullets, and jack heard glass shatter all around, bullets whizzed above him. Jack got back up to see the controls; he could see two men chasing after him out of the windscreen and one, nearly dead. Jack had run over his arm, and he was just alive. Jack made off round a side road, and made for it fast. The two men closed behind him. Jack drove the car forward at impossible speeds, until he came to the coast. The Pacific Ocean loomed in front of him. If he turned round now, he could catch the ferry to Australia and get treatment for mum. A ridiculous idea, Jack realised, as it would take ages to get there, and the men on the bikes would catch up. There was no point trying to get to Asia or Japan from here, as the was nowhere to go. Until Jack saw it. A folding bridge, right next to the dock. The bridge folded out from the middle, to let boats pass through. The bridge was about to close, Jack would easily make it, but the bikers wouldn’t.
Jack once again put the car into drive, and dashed forward. He raced up to the bridge, confused and dazzled with shots firing all around him, now as Jack looked back, there were two more men, all of them on his trail. Jack thought his plan was unbeatable. But as he drove up the first side of the bridge he suddenly thought; ‘Uh oh. The bridge will take me down into the pier. Driving into the pier on a car, I would surely get people killed. Jack didn’t have time to change his mind.
The bridge begun to fold. Jack wasn’t going to make it. He needed to think fast. Suddenly he thought of something, he would be badly injured, and probably shot by the bikers, but Mum would be Ok, and he would be alive.
The bridge, was designed to fold so boats could get through. Currently, a boat was going underneath it. Jack quickly dragged mum out the car. He struggled to stand on the slowly folding bridge. The boat was very tall and if he threw Mum off, it would be a 3 centimetre fall to the boat. But if jack got off, he would be shot. He lowered Mum onto the boat, without another option. Mum lay still on the reinforced glass roof, still breathing. Then, the bikers caught up. A single shot fired, and jack fell off the bridge.
You know what hospitals are like. It’s always scary when you suddenly wake up in one. Blood oozed out of Jack’s neck, seeping through his bandage. ‘He’s come round’ a voice whispered.
“Hi Jack” the tone was of a parent, loving and sweet. Jack opened one eye then the other. “Take it easy” Dad said. What happened? How? Why? The questions rolled through Jack's mid. “You were shot in the neck” Dad continued. “Don’t worry, the bullet only skimmed you, once you have a painkiller you’ll be fine.” Dad turned his head to a nurse. “Can you give me the painkiller?” The nurse pulled something out of her pocket and presented it to Dad. “Are you sure this is it? It doesn’t look like morphine.” The nurse nodded. Dad turned back to Jack. “Hold still. This won’t hurt.” Jack wondered why doctors always say that before they hurt you. The needle pricked Jacks skin. Suddenly the nurse leapt into Dad and pounded his face with her fist. Jack tried to help but he couldn’t. An awkward feeling rushed through his blood stream, taking over his body. Suddenly he heard a voice that suddenly whispered the words through his mind. “Kill him”. Jack couldn’t help it. Suddenly it happened.
Orange striped fur rushed through his arms and over his skin, covering him, his eyes widened with anger, a menacing green. Claws sprung from his fingers. Centimetre by centimetre, his teeth grew longer, and became sharper. An outburst of strength bulleted through his body. His heart gave a massive pump. The tiger took over. “CLAWS” the voice rushed through his mind” “Kill him” the voice suddenly became subtle. Jack couldn’t help it. “I’m sorry” he whispered.
Jack flew out of the bed, pouncing on his prey. All at once, he dived over the nurse and swiped a claw into Dad’s face. Dad flew back in pain and Jack was trapped inside a tiger. ‘STOP IT,’ he yelled at himself, but another part of him fought back and took control. Without the ability to stop himself, the Jack Pixie Island knew faded into a tiger. It was then the he was fully changed. His original thoughts fomented into a killer instinct. He wanted to do it. He had to do it.
Dad had no time to be surprised. The nurse leapt out into a flying kick and smashed Jack into the window, smashing it and raising the alarm. Someone came to take a look at what the fuss was all about. They didn’t walk out. They were carried on the stretcher. Dad was having a desperate attempt to bring Jack back to the surface. It was no good. Jack leapt out into a straight attack that flung the nurse out of the window into the road. Dad was next. At once, he ripped a metal pole off from the radiator and threw it at the nurse who had just got back through the window. It pinned her to the wall and smashed her through it. In the meantime, Jack had leapt over dad’s shoulder, into the broken wall and threw the nurse at Dad. She got up fast and flipped into Jack. He caught her leg and swung her round and round, until he let go and she was thrown into and out of the door, into the next ward. Then he went after Dad.
Pixilian Mountain High school, Pixie Island
Craig cracked his knuckles and stared dirtily at Mr. Konner, the new art teacher.
“Detention for looking at me, Mr. Craig,” Mr Konner had a habit of making sarcastic jokes. This wasn’t one, as Mr Konner also had a habit of detesting dirty looks. ‘A fair punishment for a nasty crime’ thought Mr. Konner. No one liked Mr. Konner. Not even his mother. Mr Konner was the ugliest, strictest, meanest, (and of course weirdest) teacher the school had had the misfortune to hire. But they were short of staff. Besides, who was tough enough to drill discipline in Craig Jhoner’s brain. “Where is Jack Roberts may I ask?” commented Mr. Konner as he eyed the empty space next to Craig. “The whole class can now have a detention for NOT ANSWERING!” the class moaned. “And a detention for moaning!”
“Sir?” a hand went up from the back of the class. “Sir, it’s 10:00 pm at night. Does after school detention have to be for the whole of after school? And besides, Jack went home ages ago when school finished. He didn’t get after school detention because he was in the bathroom when the class misbehaved and got our detention.”
“Well, he got detention for being in the bathroom in the lesson!”
“But sir, you gave him permission to go.”
“Now you will get after school detention tomorrow for answering back!”
There was no beating Mr. Konner.
Craig stood up and used a single movement of his hand. A small stone flew out and slammed hard into Mr. Konner's head. He was out before he hit the ground. "Alright guys," said Craig as he left the classroom. "School's out!" The class cheered and ran towards the exit. No-one on the planet could discipline Craig. Or at least on this planet. As he lleeft, Craig thouguht to himself: ' When Jack's back tomorrow, he's gonna get a beatin'!"
Pixie Island medical centre and Hospital, 3rd Street.
Jack was'nt goign to be at school tomorrow though. At the moment he had pinned Dad to the floor and the voice in his head was taking over his body. The tiger claw was outstrechd over Dad's body. The tiger pounced on Dad. The claws started to move towards his throat. jack tried to stop himself, but the claw wouldn't stop. With a burst of all the energy jack had left, he desperately fiught the urge to slice Dad's throat. He gave out a mighty scream, puled the arm away, and watched the world spin round. The colours in the room faded form red to yellow to arange and to black as his legs buckled and he hit the floor. He was out cold.
