RSE/FRLG GBA Glitches

Okay, so I just brought a pre-used Ruby, and I was playing it on my old DS lite. When I saved and turn off though, the save file was deleted. This had happened before, on my FireRed game. I need to know, Is it the DS or the games? Please help!

Have you tried turning it off, cleaning the cartridge contact, then putting it back in again? (Without saving a new game file, of course.)
It's usually with the games; the save files may disappear without warning, but if you turn it off immediately, clean the cartridge, then insert it and turn the system back on you should be fine.

How well do you have to clean it? It tried blowing into the cartridge, but that didn't work. Would a wet Q-tip work? Or something similar?

blowing should be sufficient...you may need to try it a couple times to get it to work. If it doesn't...I think you're out of luck.

Moved to Third Generation for obvious reasons.

I don't have much to add, other than anything with moisture can potentially rust the contacts, like breath or wet Q-tips.
