Ruling Generation Mixing?

First... if this question's been asked and answered, I apologize. I lurked for a while and couldn't find anything, so I just thought I'd start a new thread.

Now, I've been out of the Pokemon deal for quite some time, and for some reason, picked up a deck of Diamond and Pearl cards.

Now, I have a question... Is there anything in the official ruling about mixing generations? IE: Could you mix a 10+ year old 'Charizard' into a newer deck (with Mudkips, "Unowns," etc), or is there some type of ruling prohibiting this.

Again, sorry for any inconvenience.

Currently, if you are planning on playing a deck in a POP (Pokemon Organized Play) sanctioned tournament, the only cards that are legal for use are cards from Holon Phantoms up to Majestic Dawn. After Worlds, as of 9/1/08, the modified format will change to Diamond and Pearl on. This means that you cannot use cards that were printed before these sets, unless they have been reprinted in a set that is currently legal for use. The generation that the Pokemon is from has nothing to do with it, meaning: using a Pokemon from the R/B/Y era and a Pokemon from the R/S/E era in the same deck is perfectly fine. (I think that is partly what you are asking at least. :S)

If you have any more questions, just ask.

Alright, thanks for the help.

Also, so, from what you're saying, I'll (pretty much) be safe to use and mix cards that are currently for mainstream sale (such as the ones found in Lava Flow, Powerhouse, so on and so forth) ... I'm figuring that mixing these cards would be fine, similar to mixing "Base Set" cards with Fossil and Jungle set cards from way back in the day, correct?

Sorry if I'm coming off as a bit stupid in these regards, it's just been about 9 years since I've even laid eyes on a Pokemon card, and I don't wanna be playing somebody and flip out a card that's illegal for use. And with all the thousands of new cards that have appeared over the years, I guess it'll just take some time to get a little "caught up" ... but thanks for the help. =]

ya, with the modifed format, only anything sold in the DP block is legal for use. There have been no reprints out of the block pokemon wise.

And for the record, these are what's still legal:

SETS
Diamond/Pearl (with no subtitle)
Mysterious Treasures
Secret Wonders
Great Encounters
Majestic Dawn
Legends Awakened (not released yet but will be when the pre-D/P sets get rotated out)

OTHER CARDS
POP6 and POP7 (mini-sets given out at Pokémon League organizations)
Cards from the Trainer Kit featuring Manaphy and Lucario
Promo cards marked "DP001" and onward

If it isn't one of those sets above, then it's not tournament-legal. I personally don't like this much, considering Japan does it a lot less. But like in the beginning, you're free to mix up cards from different sets, as long as they're all from the above sets or were reprinted in the above sets (such as Switch and Potion; you're free to use the old Base Set Switches and Potions if you wish, or Basic Energy for that matter).

You must be careful though. A few distribution companies, like Excell Marketing, sell a lot of packs and decks from older sets, completely unaware they're phased out.

Not for much longer...if you're starting to play or returning after a very long time, I'd advise to go by the 2008-2009 format so that you're not swept behind when you finally get the hang of it.
