Ruling Gengar EX/Safeguard

Hi, I went to an event recently and played against a Gengar EX deck. I had a Sigilyph with Safeguard, and the person I was playing said Gengar's Night Attack attack can go through because he's not attacking, "he's placing damage". Although, Safeguard says that attacks, damage, or effects don't go through. I let the guy give me the damage, because it was my first time at this event and I didn't want to start problems.
Can you please tell me who was right??

Placing damage counters is, in fact, an effect of Night Attack. Thus, it would be prevented by Safeguard as long as Sigilyph is the one being targeted.

An advice I'd give to any newcomer is to call a judge when you have any doubt about a ruling, whatever it is.
