Ruling Getting back into the TCG

Hey guys, I started playing the Pokemon TCG when Base Set first came out. I loved playing it, and competed in local weekly tournaments and had a blast and met some cool people. I was recently at HobbyTownUSA and saw a Pokemon league going on and looked at some of the new cards that have come out and it piqued my interest. I was wondering, if I want to start fresh...what should I buy or start off with first? Starter deck most likely, but one thing that has me confused are all the expansion sets. I'm not sure which set(s) are the most current. So any advice on how to get started would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Ah, another returning player. Well, the best things to do before anything is to use the Carddex, Poképedia or Apprentice. They all show legal Pokés, from least to most comprehensive. Then ask around, the Shadowquake deck in LM, the Steeplechase deck in DS, are popular. The PK decks are useful as well, by my opinion.

I was in the same boat as you about a year ago.
I started when Base Set first came out and left after Neo 4 came out, so I know where you are coming from.

The thing that helped me get back into Pokemon TCG the most was to get the apprentice program download from Pokebeach.com
With that I was able to, little by little, work my way back into having a knowledge of the cards that allowed me to make good decisions about my future in the game.

In my opinion, you should start with the free stuff to see if you would like to invest more of yourself into the game, before you go head over heals into buying decks and packs.

Make sure you can go to a League or Local Tournament. Then try and locate the best player there, chat with 'em, know what's going on, and they might give you some free commons/energies to help you and put you on your way. Get to know the Organizer, and attend as often as you can.

That's the best way for any player to learn. It should be easy to locate one, since you already went to one :p

Arcanine out.
